Title: New Germany Green Team

1
New Germany Green Team
  • A School-wide Effort to Create a More Efficient,
    Less Wasteful Environment

2
The Green Team
  • The team consists of students from grades 4 6,
    two teachers and the custodian.
  • They will have completed three training sessions
this year along with the custodian, two teachers
involved in organizing the team and the kitchen
    staff.

3
Education
  • The bulletin board has been used to show
    students/staff where common recyclables,
refundables, compost and paper items are properly
    placed.

4
Schedule
  • Students signed up for one day a week to carry
    out the recycling tasks.
  • Because of many other noon-hour activities
happening at the school, students are free to
    trade off days.

5
Every room in the school is equipped with
posters, a paper container, compost bucket,
recyclable tub and a small garbage can. Every
container is collected daily by grade 6 students.
6
Paper Towels
  • In the kitchen and bathrooms containers are used
    for wet paper towels.

7
Collection
  • Two students collect the bins from the
classrooms, one for the rooms downstairs and one
for the rooms upstairs to be taken to a central
    location for sorting.
  • The bins have classroom numbers on them.

8
Recyclables
  • Rubber gloves are worn to protect hands.
  • They are hung on an indoor clothes-line to dry.

9
Sorting
  • Two students sort the recyclables as clean or
items that need to be rinsed.
  • A compost and garbage bin is nearby in case of
    mistakes from the bins.

10
Rinsing
  • Two containers are used to clean any recyclables
before placing them into the large bin.
  • Usually one large transparent bag gets filled
    daily.

11
Cleaning
  • All the collection bins are washed and dried
before being returned to the rooms in the school.

12
Starting Over
  • Two students return the clean bins to start the
    process the next day.

13
Refundables
  • Most classes place their refundables in a
container in the classroom. Others place them in
the recyclable bins and the Green Team sorts them.

14
Fundraiser
  • Students in the grade
  • 5 6 classroom daily collect, rinse and
return the bottles as a fundraiser.

15
Keeping Track
  • One team member writes down items from each
classroom that are not placed properly.
  • More than three errors (grade 4-6) and five
(grade P-3) means the classroom gets a rejection
    sticker.

16
Rejection Stickers
  • The classrooms post the rejection stickers on a
wall as a friendly reminder of their global duty
as citizens to help the earth.

17
Busted
  • Three rejection stickers means that class has to
send representatives (6-8) to do the recycling
    process the next day.

18
Compost Bins
  • After lunch break, students from the grade 6
class daily collect, empty and wash the compost
bins with the help of the custodian.

19
All the items are put into the proper bins
outside the school. The barn is used for paper.
20
Earth Day Fun
  • Click on the earth to practice sorting
  • of paper, cans and plastic.
  • Click on the sandcastle to place common beach
    items in the correct containers.
  • Sing along with Cycler and his 'Rubbish Rap
    song.

21
Thanks
  • New Germany students and staff continue to learn
how to participate in the 3 Rs Reduce, Reuse
and Recycle with the efforts of the team.
  • Thank you, team ,for taking your free time to
help all of us everyday to improve in these areas.
