CoachesThe Key to the Success of Our Program
  • Model positive behavior
  • Teach the children the game of basketball
  • Spread around the playtime
  • Manage parents
  • Respect referees
  • Youth coaches
  • Have Fun!

11
Behavior Incidents Last Year
  • Numbers
  • Spoke to 5 coaches
  • 1 coach was suspended for a game
  • Spoke to 10 parents
  • 4 parents (3 moms) were suspended for a game
  • 1 player was suspended for a game
  • Themes
  • Parents thought refs werent calling games
closely enough and it was too physical
  • Parents thought their child was being called too
    frequently for fouling

12
Parent Messages
  • Our goal is to model positive behavior for the
kids. This is about more than basketball to us.
    It's about teaching good sportsmanship.
  • Zero tolerance for verbally abusing the refs.
They are an important part of our program. If
you're upset with the reffing, contact your coach
or Neal Abravanel...don't yell at the refs.
  • Yelling at refs raises the tension in the gyms
and impacts the players very negatively. Their
play tends to get more physical and emotional and
    it makes the situation worse.
  • Frequently, our refs are kids. You would not want
    your child yelled at.

13
Coach Messages
  • Same points as indicated for parents plus the
    following.
  • You went to the Coaches meeting and know what we
expect. This can not happen from a coach.
  • You are the role model to these players. You need
to focus on positively coaching the kids, not
    arguing calls.
  • Most parents spoken to acknowledged that they
handled the situation poorly and were apologetic.
We had mixed results with the coaches.

14
Referee Program2 Directors

  • trains referees
  • manages referee performance

    coaches, and others

18
Referee Program
  • Pre-game introductions
  • When a coach or player has a question, concern or
problem, they should only address the head
referee at the table during a time out, between
    quarters or after the game.
  • Unless they have congratulatory comments and/or
handshakes for each referee after the game, they
should refrain from interacting with the floor
    referees.
  • If you have concerns, you can contact Neal after
    the game to discuss further.
  • Or email GFHoopsFeedback_at_googlegroups.com

19
Referee ProgramRule Change

difficult time, Great Falls Basketball is hosting
an exciting 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on
