2
Abstract
  • A lot of new homes today are wired for network
capabilities. With these capabilities there is
the possibility to run audio and video anywhere
in the house using a central server.
  • The smart home should be improved from only being
hooked up through an expensive hard wired system
to a plug and play system that can be used in
conjunction with an existing CAT5 network.

3
Background
  • Current home entertainment systems consist of
    many modules
  • Amp
  • DVD/VCR
  • Surround Sound
  • Cable Box
  • Receiver
  • CD Player

4
Background
  • There 4 Main problems with these units
  • They are normally big
  • They are normally kept in a cabinet
  • Hard to operate
  • There are a lot of wires
  • Messy
  • Hard to set up
  • Expensive
  • Not all units are compatible
  • RF Modulators
  • Adapters
  • They only work in that specific room

5
Design Goals
  • Make a Video and an Audio box to replace most of
the units in a home entertainment system
  • Make the Audio and Video units user friendly
  • The Audio and Video units should be affordable to
    most people
  • The units should be able to be plug in anywhere
in the house where there are CAT5 plugs

6
Operational Flow Chart
Handshake occurs between box and server
Boxes Get Plugged Into Network
Boxes Get Dynamic IP Address
File is sent and run
Audio or Video Box request a file
Server and Box wait for next request

14
Video Box
  • The video box will have the following
    capabilities.
  • Ethernet capabilities.
  • Streaming Audio.
  • Streaming Video.
  • DVD/CD player.

15
Video Box
  • Way of operation
  • The box will be designed to interface with a TV
    and stereo system.
  • It will use Text Overlay, IR remote control as
well as a few push buttons on the device for user
    interface.
  • A small LCD screen will be placed on the device
for operation without the use of the TV, when the
user just wants to listen to music.

16
Video Box
  • Streaming video/audio.
  • The box will request MPEG/WMA/DivX format files
    from the server.
  • Once received the box will decode them and send
them to be displayed on the TV screen.
  • Audio files will be sent directly to the stereo
    system.
  • DVD/CD player
  • DVD-ROM will be built into the device so that the
user can play CDs or DVDs right from the unit.

17
Video Box
  • In order to accomplish all of the above tasks we
decided to build a mini computer.
  • We will be using VIAs Mini ITX motherboard with
    a C3 1GHz process.
  • To that we will attach a DVD-ROM.
  • A small LCD, IR controller, and a couple push
buttons will be implemented into the device as
    well, for user interface.

18
Video Box
  • VIAs C3 processor and the ITX motherboard are
known for their low power operation.
  • That allows us to run the device without any
fans, which reduces the operational noise
    dramatically.
  • Motherboard comes with both S-Video and
composite video ports, which will allow easier
    interface with the TV.
