In the Beginning

• The year is 1271. My father, my uncle, and I
  set sail
• for the East. Our first stop was Jerusalem where
  we collected holy oil to bring to Kublai Khan. We
  traveled across the Mediterranean Sea and through
  the countryside. We saw many beautiful buildings
  and wealthy towns.

Our Route

• We journeyed to China along the Silk Road, a
• route from Europe to Asia, to bring home goods
  such as silks and jewels.

Our First Stop

• Sailing in the middle ages could be dangerous.
  In 1271 we sailed from Venice, Italy across the
  Mediterranean Sea. We landed in Jerusalem, the
  Holy Land.

At the Tomb

• At Jesuss tomb we collected holy oil from the
  lamp that always burns.

New Experiences

• It took us three years to travel over land to
  China. I tasted new food, tried on new
• clothes, and met new friends. I learned to
  speak four Asian languages. I heard about the
  ghostly army in the desert and the evil spirits
  that led travelers astray.

Troubles Along the Way

• We traveled north from the Persian Gulf across
  salt flats in Iran. The only water we found was
  green and too bitter to drink.

More Dangers Ahead

• We heard about the ghostly army. The mongols
  said they heard horses and the shouts and cries
  of battles.

Land of Jewels

• Off the coast of Ceylon and Eastern India, I
  watched divers search for oysters with pearls.

Scary Monsters

• I saw very ugly brutes called black unicorns,
  and men with tails in Sumatra and Indonesia.

Dreams of Going Home

• After traveling and seeing many wonderful
  things, I dreamed of returning to Venice. We
  needed Kublai Khans permission. We volunteered
  to escort a Mongol princess to the Middle East
  for her wedding. We traveled by sea and returned
  to Venice in 1295.

Home at Last!

• It was good to be home at last!

A War at Home

• In 1298, two Italian cities, Venice and Genoa,
  went to war. I was captured
• and put in prison.

My Story Is Told

• While in prison, I met a writer named
  Rusticello. I told him all about my travels and
  he wrote them down. He turned my stories into a
  popular book.
