Student Affairs Who are We and What do we Do?
  • As partners in learning, Student Affairs supports
    and enhances the academic mission of the
    University through the provision of
    learner-centred programs, services and facilities
    that focus on the well-being and development of
    the whole person.

We Provide a Supportive Environment for Students
  • This year saw the first publication of the New
    Student Handbook and an International Student
    Handbook
  • Exceptional care and education to children is
    provided by Child Care and Learning Services to
    allow students to attend classes worry-free
  • Our week long Pre-Flight Summer Transition
    Program for Students with Cognitive Disabilities
    is seen as best practice in the province
  • Over 5,000 students are supported in our
    residence system
  • START International attendance tripled with over
    100 international students in attendance

Our Impact is Extensive
  • Counselling saw over 1600 individual students and
    saw a significant increase in the number and
    range of group offerings
  • We currently offer 31 co-op programs to
    approximately 1800 students
  • In 06/07, there were 31,231, doctor visits and
    7,904 visits to an RN
  • In 06/07, 7,388 wrote exams in the CSD Centre
  • In 06/07 681 students asked for career testing
  • We increased our Aboriginal intake in 2007 from
    24 (2006) to 49 incoming students for a total
    of 164 students
  • 667 varsity athletes compete on 31 teams

We Encourage Volunteerism
  • Offered 5 Global Learner experiences (India,
    Peru, Ecuador, El Salvador and Costa Rica)
  • Lifeguards raised 2400 for Relay for Life which
    overall raised over 60,000
  • Moving On Play program in schools with 69
    university volunteers delivering the program to
    400 children in the largest week in the schools. 
  • Record number of new peers trained for Fall 2007
    (82)
  • Hundreds of senior students volunteer as OVs
  • Student Life supported SEC in hosting their first
    Student Involvement Fair
  • Students raise food in programs such as Meal
    Exchange, Trick or Eat or bringing a donation to
    the Athletic Banquet

  • 20 Exam Proctors/ Scribes
  • Over 220 Notetakers

We Continue to Evolve
  • CECS is developing new branding image
  • For the first time Student Life transformed a
    Project Serve Canada service experience to a 0.5
    credit course (Project Serve Nunavut)
  • Go Transit ticket sales were successfully
    integrated within a renovated Information Desk
    service
  • The CSD and Counselling Services Reception and
    waiting areas were integrated
  • An Outcomes Assessment -Student Survey will guide
    future changes in CECS
  • A Continued expansion of single student spaces at
    Family Housing allows us to accommodate more
    upper year students

We Introduce New Programs
  • In partnership with Interhall, SHS offered TGIF
    programming as well as a "Residence Safety
    Initiative"
  • Wellness introduced a new program called HEAL
    (healthy eating active living) which was
    successful in starting a Wednesday noon walking
    group and the Guelph Project -'Great
    Sexpectations' - was sold out!!!
  • SHS introduced an Academic Cluster Pilot in
    Johnston Hall (340 students)
  • Student Life offered a Jump Start Pilot, received
    LEF funding to design an electronic skills
    portfolio for the BAS program and introduced a
    Pots and Pans lending program for international
    students
  • SHS continued efforts to prevent or contain
    communicable illnesses by
  • distributing small bottles of hand sanitizer with
    educational info to all first year students and
    to all Varsity Athletes
  • offering influenza immunization clinics

We Use Technology to Support our Programs
  • SHS installed digital signage at its residence
    desks Athletics placed some in the Mitchell
    Centre and Arenas and the Information Desk added
    one as well
  • CECS created a Going Global website for
    international employment and resources.
  • CECS launched its Recruit Guelph web-based
    development project to enhance employer and
    student services
  • PAM the successful Peer Appointment Scheduler is
    now being expanded to support Staff appointments
  • The REG system, was used by over 8,000 students
    this year

We Support Our Community
  • Multifaith, working along other community
    partners helped to meet the fundraising mark of
    100,000 for the Masai project
  • Joan Knox participated in the planning committee
    for the Urban Organic Agriculture Centre
  • Intramurals and the Dept of Athletics will host
    Special Olympics Basketball Game with over 200
    athletes this spring
  • In Motion a collaborative effort with many
    organizations in the city to get the people in
    our region more physically active.  The Guelph
    launch broke the world record with over 21,600
    WDG residents participating.  Also launched
    active schools In motion campaign and are in 11
    schools in the region
  • Wellness Fair - community support continues to
    grow - this year participants represented more
    off campus agencies
  • Student Affairs staff raised 21,433  with almost
    every unit in SA surpassing their fundraising
    goal
  • Student Life celebrated the 10th Anniversary of
    Project Serve with a record number of
    participants and saw record numbers of students
    at electoral debates and voting
  • Move-out Madness saw over 260 large items
    collected from student homes, reducing curb-side
    garbage

We continue to Improve our Facilities
  • CCLC underwent renovations to the front office
    and toddler junior preschool playground
  • SHS completed over 7M of residence renovations
  • CECS and SLCS saw a major redevelopment of the
    3rd floor space and the move of Off Campus
    Housing to the 3rd floor
  • The Athletics Facilities Master Plan was
    completed and received overwhelming support by
    the Board

Awards and Recognition
  • Brent Harwood received the President's Exemplary
    Staff Award for Health and Safety
  • University of Guelph was chosen "School of the
    Year" by the Ontario Residence Hall Association
    (ORHA)
  • The CCLC was chosen as one of 4 sites for a
    children's Inclusion Pilot Project funded by the
    County of Wellington
  • Jaime Mishibinijima is the recipient of an
    Indigenous Health Research Development Program
    scholarship, and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship
    and is the recipient of the Aboriginal Student
    Award from the Department of National Defence
  • Jennifer Maddock was named a 2007 Woman of
    Distinction in the Education and Training category

  • Athletics wins CIRA ONTARIO Post Secondary
    Outstanding Leadership Award and for the 4th year
    in a row won the CIRA Intramural Achievement
    Award
  • Dave Scott Thomas was CIS coach of the year in 4
    sports M and W Cross Country and M and W Track
    and Field
  • Janet Gibson was named OUA coach of the year in
    Figure Skating (OUA)
  • 12 Gryphon athletes will represent Canada on
    various teams this summer
  • We had one of our most successful years ever in
    Athletics
  • We hosted the 100th Yates Cup before 8,500 fans
  • In CIS Competition, Cross country won mens and
    womens gold as did Varsity Track and Field
    womens Rugby won bronze and Field Hockey won
    Silver at the CIS Championships
  • 107 Academic All-Canadians Academic Achievement
    Awards 20 All-Canadians 68 OUA All-Stars

We Enrich the Profession
  • Heather Lane Vetere was appointed by CACUSS to
    the Council for the Advancement of Standards in
    Higher Education and taught a course at Seneca in
    the new certificate program in student
    development
  • Barb Robbins was chosen as Chair-Elect for the
    Apartments Committee of ACUHO-I
  • Tim Fricker was chosen as Finance Director on the
    Board of ACUHO)
  • University of Guelph was chosen as the host site
    of the May 2008 conference of OACUHO
  • Lynn Skilton Hayes was chosen to present at the
    IDEA conference in Las Vegas
  • Guelph hosted a conference on students and
    technology
  • Jaime Mishibinijima was named the
    Secretary-Treasurer of the National Aboriginal
    Student Services Association
