Ancient Egypt

Physical Environment
  • The ancient Egyptians thought of the land in
Egypt as being divided into 2 types, the black
land and the red land. The black land is on the
bank of the Nile River. Every time that the Nile
flooded, it got saturated and absorbed nutrients.
The ancient Egyptians used this land for growing
crops and farming. The red land is the desert
bordering Egypt. The red land was used as a
source of precious metals and semi-precious
stones by the Egyptians. The Nile River
stretches across all of ancient Egypt. If there
was no Nile River in Egypt, the whole country
    would be desert.
  • The Nile River runs all the way into the
    Mediterranean Sea.

Food
  • The ancient Egyptians mainly grew wheat and
barley because of the hot weather. They made the
wheat into bread and porridge. They added hops
to the barley to make beer, which was their main
drink. They also drank water as a different
drink. Rich people also drank wine. For meats,
they ate beef, duck and goose. They sometimes
ate fish from the Nile. They didnt eat pigs
because they thought that they carried a disease
called leprosy. For dessert, they ate dates,
watermelon, and other kinds of melons. Some
people ate honey cakes, which are pieces of bread
    with honey.

Clothing
  • Both men and women wore a simple tunic that was
like a long t-shirt. Most of the Egyptians
clothes were made of white linen. They were
white so they would reflect the suns heat. They
never wore any underwear. Neither men or women
wore shoes very often or any kind of footwear.
They would sometimes wear sandals for long
journeys and for special events. Egyptians wore
gold jewelry if they could afford it. Even some
special animals wore jewelry. Women often wore
    wigs.

5
Shelter
  • Egyptian houses were built on high ground so that
the Nile River wouldnt flood it. They looked
like a farmers house. They were built of straw
and dried mud bricks. Most people had little or
no furniture. An average person had 2 or 3 rooms
in their house. They would sometimes go on the
flat roof when the sun was not as hot. The walls
in houses were usually thick to keep the house
cool on the inside. The houses were painted
white to reflect the suns heat.

6
Religion
  • The ancient Egyptians believed in about 700
different gods and goddesses. A few of the main
gods and goddesses were Ra, the sun god, Orisis,
the god of the underworld, Amun, god of memory
and many others. The 2 gods Ra and Amun, had
combined to make one ultimate god named Amun-Ra.
The ancient Egyptians also worshipped animals
that a god could take the form of. For example,
Orisis had the ability to take the form of a
jackal, so jackals were also worshipped. Temples
were built to worship the gods. The ancient
Egyptians believed that if a pharoah had a good
life, they believed that the pharoah would turn
    into a god.

Sports
  • The ancient Egyptians had games that we sometimes
play today. They had games and sports like
leapfrog, spinning tops, ball games, archery,
running, javelin, wrestling and they had a horse
on wheels that you could play on in ancient Egypt.

8
Education
  • Most of the education went on at home. Boys
learned the trades of their fathers. Girls
learned how to keep a house. Some children went
to school to learn reading, writing and math. If
you were bad in school you got hit with a rod on
the back. Their paper called papyrus was only
    used for important writing.

9
Architecture
  • The main architecture was pyramids. They were
built as tombs for kings. The walls were made by
piling rectangles of mud bricks on top of each
other. The walls were covered in heiroglyphs.
The great pyramid in Giza is the biggest in the
world. The Egyptians wrote spells on the walls
    of pyramids.

10
People
  • The Egyptians had a strong sense of family. They
sometimes married cousins or other relatives.
Women and children were highly respected. People
usually married when they were in their early
teens. The average life span of an Egyptian was
40 years old. Some of the jobs were priests,
    scribes, farmers, builders, artists, craftsmen,
soldiers, artisans, slaves and a pharaoh.
