Essential QuestionsHow would knowing
measurement affect your ability to build
something? How does measurement relate to the
solar system?
Unit Questions How do you use a ruler? What
could you use to measure objects if you did not
have a ruler? Can the area of two different
shapes be the same? Which is larger, the area or
the perimeter of a shape? If we have large
measurements, how do we scale them so we can
place them on paper?
4
Main Student Objectives
  • The student will be able to use a ruler and
accurately measure lines and objects 95 of the
    time.
  • The student will be able to find the area and
perimeter of a polygon accurately 90 of the
    time.
  • The student will be able to scale the floor plan
of a house on paper accurately 85 of the time.

5
Major Activities
  • Learn how to measure without rulers
  • Learn about area and perimeter using the
    following websites
  • http//www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/pe
    rmarea/index.html (perimeter explorer)
  • http//www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/pe
    rm/index.html (area explorer)
  • Learn how to make a scaled model of the planets
using the Solar System Bead Distance Activity
  • Discuss how to scale polygons on paper and how it
    relates to buildings.
  • Design a dream home on graph paper using the
    scaling techniques learned.

Other fun things to do with Area and Perimeter
  • Tangrams are composed of seven pieces.  One of
the pieces is a square, another piece is a
rhomboid, and the other five pieces are isosceles
right triangles of various sizes. For a fun game
    with tangrams go to http//pbskids.org/cyberchase/
    games/area/tangram.html
  • Tessellation make awesome pictures with regular
    polygonal shapes http//nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames
    _asid_163_g_2_t_3.html?openactivities
  • Help Bucky figure out the material he needs to
build a house, a jungle gym or a barn.
