  • Sojourner Truth was born a slave in upstate
    New York in approximately 1779. She went to
    Northampton in 1843 to live at the Northampton
    Association of Education and Industry, a utopian
    community in Florence. She labored for a
    succession of five masters until the the Forth of
    July, 1827, when slavery was finally abolished
    in New York State. Sojourner Truth was a
    powerful speaker and singer.

  • Sojourner Truths real name was Isabella
    Baumfree. She was sold from her family when she
    was around eleven. She was sold many times until
    her freedom in 1827. Sojourner Truth traveled
    throughout the north preaching emancipation and
    women's rights.

  • Sojourner Truth and another fellow slave
    named Thomas had 4 possibly 5 children. She gave
    the speech, Aint I a Woman, in 1851 at the
    Womens Rights Convention in Ohio. Sojourner
    Truth died in 1883 at an old age. She was buried
    in Battle Creek.

  • Sojourner Truths fight for womens rights,
    the abolition of slavery, and her attempt to help
    former slaves, has made her a legend in American
    History. Despite the fears of slavery and the
    inability to read, she was able to become a
    influential public speaker.
