Introduction of Paper 2
  • Objective
  • The objective of this assignment is for you to
practice using and arranging specifics to explain
and support general ideas in writing.
  • Subject
  • In this assignment you will write a paper on
some aspect of body language or nonverbal
communication in your home culture (Academic
Writing, p. 114). Alternatively, you may choose
to write about a unique social activity from your
native country. For example, a Japanese student
may write about bowing in Japan or the Japanese
    Miai (blind-dating) activity.
  • Audience and Purpose
  • The audiences of this essay are the other
members of the class and me, your instructor.
The purpose is to let the audiences learn more
about your home culture, especially about the
    ways of communication.

Introduction of Paper 2
  • Organization
  • 1. Introduction
  • In the introductory paragraph, you will present
the subject of your essay to readers. Please
introduce the subject in an interesting way so
that the essay will catch the readers eyeballs
immediately. For example, you may tell readers
why the subject is interesting to foreigners. At
the end of the introductory paragraph, you should
talk briefly about the main ideas you are going
to develop in the following body paragraphs. In
this way, readers come to know the organization
    of your paper beforehand.

Introduction of Paper 2
  • 2. Body
  • The body should consist of at least three
paragraphs. Each paragraph should focus on one
aspect of the subject. Taking bowing as an
example, you may write about the accurate posture
of bowing in the first body paragraph, the
various contexts of bowing behaviors in the
second body paragraph, and the exceptions in the
third body paragraph. In each body paragraph a
general controlling idea should appear in the
topic/leading sentence. And you will use specific
details to explain and support the controlling
idea. Remember that all the information in a body
paragraph should be relevant to its controlling
    idea.

  • 3. Conclusion
  • The conclusion should summarize and restate all
the main ideas mentioned in the body. However,
you should avoid using the same sentences that
are used previously. Concluding statements often
begin with a reference to something previously
stated or with a transition. In a long essay or
speech, the writer may use a transitional phrase
such as In conclusion, but in short essays or
paragraphs the conclusion is usually announced
with expressions such as Thus, ,Therefore,,
As we have seen, or In short,.
