It is an unruly evil, full of deadly
poison. (James 38)
The Murderous Tongue
3
Not one of us wants to believe that we would
actually engage in backbiting, talebearing,
gossiping, slandering, murmuring, or sowing
discord among brethren. But it is very likely
that we all have done so at some time.
The Murderous Tongue
4
The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and
adds learning to his lips. (Prov. 1623)
The Murderous Tongue
5
When words are many, sin is not absent, but he
who holds his tongue is wise. (Prov. 1019)
The Murderous Tongue
6
Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his
soul from troubles. (Prov. 2123)
The Murderous Tongue
7
He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man
of understanding is of a calm spirit. (Prov.
1727)
The Murderous Tongue
8
A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart
of fools proclaims foolishness. (Prov. 1223)
The Murderous Tongue
9
A fool has no delight in understanding, but in
expressing his own heart. (Proverbs 182)
The Murderous Tongue

There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts

healing. (Prov. 1218)

Psalm 151-3 1 Lord, who may abide in Your
tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy
hill? 2    He who walks uprightly, And works
righteousness, And speaks the truth in his
heart 3    He who does not backbite with his
tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes
up a reproach against his friend.
The Murderous Tongue
12
Proverbs 616-19 16    These six things the Lord
hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to
Him 17    A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands
that shed innocent blood, 18    A heart that
devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in
running to evil, 19    A false witness who speaks
lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.
The Murderous Tongue
13
Matthew 1815-17
Between youand him alone
Moreover if your brother sins against you, go
and tell him his fault between you and him alone.
If he hears you, you have gained your brother.
14
Instructions for handling problems
Matthew 1815-17
  • 1815 - Deal with it privately.
  • 1816 - If no resolution is found, involve other
Christians who will be able to help resolve it.
  • 1817 - Ask the whole church to help if the
    problem still exists.

15
Keeps Us From Sharing the Problem
Matthew 1815-17
  • We really do not need advice we need to OBEY!
  • Debate your case with your neighbor, And do not
disclose the secret to another. Proverbs
    2529
  • We should want solutions, not audiences.

16
Keeps Us From Sharing the Problem
Matthew 1815-17
  • Murmuring against brethren, even if not by name,
    sows discord.
  • For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where
there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.
    Proverbs 2620
  • A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart
of fools proclaims folly. Prov. 1223

17
Keeps Us From Sharing the Problem
Matthew 1815-17
  • Third parties will often make the problem worse,
    not better.
  • Like one who takes a dog by the ears, is he who
passes by and meddles with strife not belonging
    to him. Proverbs 2617

18
Keeps Us From Sharing the Problem
Matthew 1815-17
  • No passage allows an exception to this rule.
  • Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to
do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
    James 417
  • There is no right way to do the wrong thing!

19
What should you do?
If one tells you their problems with a 3rd party
  • Instruct them to go to that person alone gently
encourage them not to complain against or sow
    discord among brethren.
  • If they say it is not really a sin and they
    choose not to go privately
  • Encourage them not to speak of it again. They
need to forbear and forget it.

20
What should you do?
If one tells you their problems with a 3rd party
  • If they continue to bring it up
  • Gently reprove them of murmuring insist that
    they handle the problem scripturally.
  • If they insist it is not a sin, and they still
    wont go the person(s), then
  • Pray with them that God will help them to rid
    themselves of resentment.

The Tongue Reflects The Heart
Matthew 1234-37 (NKJV) 34 out of the abundance
of the heart the mouth speaks.  35 A good man
out of the good treasure of his heart brings
forth good things, and an evil man out of the
evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I
say to you that for every idle word men may
speak, they will give account of it in the day of
judgment. 37 For by your words you will be
justified, and by your words you will be
condemned.
22
The Tongue Reflects The Heart
Ephesians 429-32 (NKJV) 29 Let no corrupt word
proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for
necessary edification, that it may impart grace
to the hearers.  30 And do not grieve the Holy
Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the
day of redemption.  31 Let all bitterness,
wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put
away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to
one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
23
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of
my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my
strength and my Redeemer. Psalm 1914
The Restrained Tongue
24
