  • People in Europe believed that on October 31st
the spirits of people who died during that year
would wake up and come back to search for living
bodies to possess for the next year.

4
Spirits returning?
5
  • People did not want to be possessed by spirits.
  • They put out fires in their homes to make them
cold. They also decorated their houses to look
    scary.
  • Then they would dress up like ghosts or ghouls to
    scare away the spirits.

6
  • Today, most people do not believe that the dead
can walk around on October 31st.
  • However, Americans still celebrate the holiday.

7
What do Americans do on Halloween?
  • Children dress up in different costumes.
  • During the school day, children in elementary
school have class parties. The students wear
costumes and get candies and treats.
  • At night, children in costume walk in the
streets. They go door to door to ask for candy
and goodies. Trick or treat they shout.
