3 Market Transformation Strategy
- Market Transformation team newly formed.
- Pete Devlin, Christy Cooper, Amy Manheim
- Research conducted and early markets identified.
- Market Transformation Strategy being developed.
4 Market Transformation Strategy
- Market Transformation Strategy being developed
and will focus on - Partnering with other Federal agencies, state and
local governments, and industry to facilitate
deployment - Many partnerships established efforts on-going
- Interagency agreements have been entered with the
Defense Logistics Agency - Interagency agreements are underway with the
Department of the Interior/NPS, FAA, and USPS - Educating and informing safety and code
officials, potential end-users, state/local
government representatives, and investors
5EARLY MARKETS
- Early Markets Identified
- Material handling equipment (forklifts) and
specialty vehicles (ground service equipment) - Back-up power (telecommunications, utilities,
financial institutions) - Portable power (first response and military
applications)
A report completed for DOE by Battelle Memorial
Institute assesses and identifies key early
markets for PEM fuel cell systems. See

6EARLY MARKETS Focus Material Handling Equipment
- Fuel cells for material handling equipment
- Products commercially available today
- Allow for rapid refueling much faster than
changing or recharging batteries - Provide constant power without voltage drop
- Eliminate the need for space for battery storage
and chargers
Fuel cell technology is cost-competitive today

electric reach trucks at its Topton, PA
distribution center to fuel cell power, in
partnership with Nuvera Fuel Cells.

7EARLY MARKETS Focus Backup Power
- Fuel cells for backup power
- Commercially available today
- Provide longer continuous run time, greater
durability than batteries - Require less maintenance than generators
- Offer cost savings over batteries and generators

cost for PEMFCs at 176-hour run time is due
primarily to the cost of hydrogen storage
8DOE Activities Outreach State and Local
Governments
Bimonthly Calls for States State/Regional
Initiatives Hosted by DOE, National Hydrogen
Association, and Clean Energy Group
- What Brief presentation from expert on a topic
of interest e.g., forklifts as an early market
application questions and discussion - Annual in-person meeting at NHA Annual Hydrogen
Conference (next in Sacramento, CA March
30-April 3, 2008) - When 2nd Wednesday of every other month, 12
p.m. Eastern (45 min 1 hour) - Expert presentation 20 min remaining time

10Opportunities for Coalition Participation
- Inform the program of new or on-going early
market hydrogen and fuel cell projects - Coordinate hydrogen activities, including
outreach and publications with the SEO, DOE and
appropriate stakeholders - Participate in the bi-monthly State and Regional
conference calls - Identify potential early market projects and
partners - Partnering with multiple Federal agencies can
also increase opportunities with Clean Cities to
develop hydrogen projects
