Welcome to 3rd Grade!
  • This is an important year for you and your child.
  • The following presentation will give you an
    introduction to the third grade classroom.

All About Me
  • My Background
  • I have received a Bachelor and Master degree in
    teaching from Oakland University.
  • I have received the honor of Chippewa Valley
    Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2000.
  • My Experience
  • Ive been teaching for 19 years.
  • I have taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade.
  • I have worked in the Instructional Technology
    department writing and implementing curriculum,
    concentrating on assisting kindergarten, first,
    and second grade students and teachers.

Goals
  • My goals for the year include
  • Giving students the academic tools they need to
    progress and be successful in all academic areas.
  • Creating students who are life long learners.
  • Providing a supportive learning environment.
  • Ensuring students have fun while they are
    learning.
  • Helping students to make new friends and discover
    new interests.

Class Content
  • I will cover subjects and topics that the nation,
    state, and Chippewa Valley Schools believe are
    important for students to learn during third
    grade.
  • I will be following the Chippewa Valley Schools
    third grade curriculum guides.

Daily Routine
  • The students day will be divided into several
    blocks of time. Here is a sample of a typical
    day
  • 900-915 Calendar Activities, Agenda
  • 915-1002 Math
  • 1002-1104 Specials (Music,Science, Art,
    Enrichment, Gym)
  • 1005-1236 Poetry, Instructed Reading, Grammar,
    and Spelling
  • 1236-l06 Lunch
  • 106-130 Recess
  • 130-200 Writing
  • 200-300 Science and Social Studies
  • 300-315 Handwriting
  • 315-330 Independent Reading, Study Hall,
    Dismissal

  • Students will use manipulatives, the third grade
    text, worksheets, and oral activities to cover
    the following topics and more
  • Fact Families, less than greater than
  • Place value (to the millions)
  • Money
  • Rounding
  • Measurement
  • Time
  • Multiplication, division
  • Geometry
  • Fractions
  • Probability

Reading
  • Reading will take place in many different forms.
    Students will read from the following and more
  • Third Grade Text Books
  • Leveled Books
  • Literature Books
  • Poetry Notebooks
  • Student Selected Books

Grammar
  • In order to help students become better readers
    and writers, the students will explore the basics
    of word/sentence building. The students will
    review and learn about
  • Punctuation
  • Parts of speech
  • Correct Sentence Structure
  • Dictionary and Glossary Skills

Writing/Spelling
  • Students who read become better writers and
    spellers! Students will practice writing in the
    following forms
  • Class Interviews and Stories
  • Individual Story Mapping and Story Writing
  • Journal Writing
  • Spelling Words and Spelling Activities

Handwriting
  • Students will use the DNealian or Modern style
    of cursive handwriting

Science
  • Life Science life cycles of plants and animals,
    lakes and ponds, food chains,ecosystems
  • Physical Science states of matter, energy
  • Earth Science physical features of the Earth
    related to Social Studies

Social Studies
  • Regions of the United States, including naming
    states and capitals
  • Core Democratic Values,
  • Map and globe skills
  • Economic concepts

Computers
  • Students will visit the computer lab once a week
    and use the classroom computers.
  • Computers will be used to enhance the existing
    curriculum. What was once done with paper and
    pencil, may be done using the computer.

Specials
  • The students will attend the following specials
    for one hour each week.
  • Music
  • Science Enrichment
  • Art
  • Enrichment Special
  • Gym

Class Rules
  • Our class will be using the following I-Care
    Rules.
  • We listen to each other.
  • Hands are for helping not hurting.
  • We use I-Care-Language.
  • We care about each others feelings
  • We are responsible for what we say and do.
  • Discussions and time out will be used when rules
    are broken.

Homework, Grading, Report Cards
  • Weekly homework will be described in my Monday
    Newsletters or highlighted in the agenda. Look
    for math facts, reading logs, poetry notebooks,
    and reading/spelling words on a weekly basis.
  • Students will be graded according to the third
    grade report card and grading scale. (See
    handout)
  • Students will have a portfolio of collected work
    and assessments to share at Conferences.
  • Students may attend Conferences.
