KICK UP KINESTHETIC LEARNING
2
What is a kinesthetic learner?
  • Kinesthetic/Tactile learners.
  • Kinesthetic describes their preference for
    movement.
  • Tactile describes their preference for
    touching and feeling things.

3
  • How do you know if a student is a kinesthetic
    learner?
  • Do they fidget?
  • Do they wiggle in their seat a lot, especially
when they have to sit still for a while?
  • Do they like to touch things or handle things?

4
Strategies for Kinesthetic Learners
  • Try studying while lying on a couch or the floor,
    or listening to music.
  • In class, when it is necessary to be still,
bounce your foot, twirl a pen, or squeeze a ball.
Just be sure you are not distracting those around
    you.
  • Use brightly colored paper under worksheets or
study materials to help you focus.
  • Read novels, articles, and texts while pedaling
on a stationary bike or climbing a Stairmaster.

5
Coached Pantomimes
  • One easy and fun way to bring movement into the
classroom is through the use of coached
    pantomimes.

6
  • Instructions
  • Step 1
  • Select a process or concept. For example acid
    rain cycle. Provide ample pre-instruction.
  • Step 2
  • Ask the students to spread out around the room
so that they don't touch anyone else when their
arms are extended out to the sides.
  • Step 3
  • Ask students to act out the action you just
mentioned when you say, "Act it out." Tell them
to stop acting out the action when you say,
    "Freeze."
  • Step 4
  • Allow students to work in pairs if they have
difficulty coming up with a way to act out the
    stages.

    important information.

  • For elementary students, build a life-size number
line by painting on concrete or wooden planks.
Use this to solve simple math problems.

pennies, empty jars, yogurt containers, coffee

sheet of paper. Number the paper. Put a problem
at each desk. Start music. Students answer the
question. When the music stops, student must
finish. Go over answers. Can award prize to first
three that have all the problems answered
correctly. Even worksheets, if you must, can be
