IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Enabling
Services to Cross the Chasm Between Wireline and
Wireless Worlds
  • As service providers migrate to next generation
    networks (NGN) and deploy a mix of access network
    technologies, service continuity between these
    multiple access networks must be enabled.
  • Since 2003, ATIS has supported the development of
    a globally accepted common set of IP Multimedia
    Subsystem (IMS) specifications to enable service
    continuity, as part of the industrys adopted
    path towards NGN and convergence.

ATIS Endorsement of IMSDelivery of Any
Service, Anytime, Anywhere on Any Access
Technology
  • Based on the adoption of IMS by multiple industry
    sectors (stakeholders), requirements beyond
    those traditionally contemplated as part of the
    IMS-core are emerging.
  • Inside ATIS, a number of technical groups have
    launched work to assess and address these
    requirements for IMS.
  • In May 2006, the TOPS Council commissioned the
    formation of an Exploratory Group on Convergence
    (EGC) to study the various aspects of convergence
    including IMS e.g., requirements, architecture
    and signaling to ensure a consistent approach to
    a converged NGN.

  • WTSC has been involved in the 3GPP since its
    establishment in 1998, and actively supports and
    contributes to the development of 3GPP
    specifications, including IMS.

  • working on a number of VoIP and NGN related
    Issues
  • specific to IMS is an Issue 58, Sub-Item on NGN
    Accounting Management
  • NGN Accounting Management is being worked within
    the ITU-T
  • A key part is harmonization with 3GPP Accounting
    Management (charging)

  • 36 active issue statements of which 25 deal
    directly with the development of NGN, including
    development of IMS as a base platform and
    convergence topics
  • working on service continuity across access
    networks - directly related to convergence
  • developing the NNI, UNI, and ANI interfaces for
    carrier interconnect
  • The ANI being the newest interface dealing with
    interconnection with the Application Servers
    where the services are based.
  • This could be a significant enabler for service
    convergence.
  • developing Emergency Telecommunication Service
    (ETS), Operator Services, Directory Assistance,
    LAES, and E9-1-1 capabilities for NGN and IMS
    (based on U.S. Requirements)
