Title: Book Buddies

Book Buddies
  • Using this poster as a starting point, I put
together a display for National Library Week. I
began to think about all the story characters who
have crossed over to the commercial side of the
street and are available now as toys, TV shows,
    computer games, DVDs, etc., etc..
  • The reverse is also true. A number of
characters who started life in the toy store or
in the media now share library shelves with
storybook friends who have lived only in print.
  • This display includes characters from each
    group. Lets meet them!

  • Angelina is emotional, headstrong, and
determined, and she often finds herself in
trouble - but she always bounces back. The ideas
for the Angelina stories come from author
Katherine Holabirds experiences as a mother and
nursery school teacher. When my daughters were
little girls they wore their pink tutus
everywhere. I began to write stories for
passionate and determined little girls like my
daughters, who love to twirl onstage and are
always dancing around the kitchen! Holabird and
    illustrator Helen Craig published Angelina
Ballerina in 1983 there are now more than twenty
    books in the series.
  • Arthur celebrated his 25th birthday in
2001,which makes him 31 this year.
Author/Illustrator Marc Brown started telling his
first son stories at bedtime, as his grandmother
had done for him. Most of the stories were about
animals. One night our story was about an
aardvark who hated his nose. The story became
Arthurs Nose, the first book in the Arthurs
    Adventures series.

  • Franklins adventures are based on childhood
    experiences of Canadian author Paulette
Bourgeois. The power of imagination and
creativity, and the ability to solve problems are
favorite themes in the Franklin series, which
began in 1986. Illustrator Brenda Clark brings
Franklin and friends to life by using light and
    shadow for a three-dimensional effect.
  • Mouse has eaten cookies in the kitchen, munched
popcorn at the movies, and gone to school inside
a backpack. Wherever he goes, chaos follows.
Illustrator Felicia Bond creates the clever and
colorful pictures for Laura Numeroffs books.
  • Grover is 38 years old, and still lives on
Sesame Street! The PBS program debuted in 1969.
According to his bio page at the Sesame Street
website, Grover was born on October 14, his best
friend is Kermit, and his favorite quote is
    Hello every-bod-eeee!
  • Sesame Streets multicultural approach to early
education and its subtle sense of humor won an
immediate audience, and its popularity continues.

  • Snoopy first appeared in Charles Schultzs
Peanuts comic strip on October 4, 1950. His
official biography tells us he is an introverted
beagle with a Walter Mitty complex. He is a
virtuoso in every endeavor - at least in his
daydreams. He never speaks but manages to convey
everything necessary in facial expressions and
    thought balloons.
  • Raggedy Andy is the creation of
  • free-lance illustrator Johnny Gruelle, whose
Raggedy Ann doll made her debut in 1915, followed
by a series of stories three years later. Andy
was introduced in 1922 when Gruelle serialized
the Adventures of Raggedy Ann Andy in
    newspapers across the country.
