  • I am shocked to hear the news. Please convey my
deepest sympathies to the family. While I was
not close to Augie, I knew him from his work on
campus. He was one of the good guys and I will
    miss him.

Tribute
  • Dear Mrs. Hartung and family,
  • I met Augie about a year ago when he first
interviewed me for a job with the campus. On that
day and ever since, he made such an effort to
make me feel welcome and valued, and he always
took the time to acknowledge my efforts, however
small. He will remain a bright spot in my
    thoughts.

Tribute
  • I don't quite know what to say. I'm really
sadden to hear of this, Augie was a great guy who
always took the time to make everything personal
and made it a point to talk everyone. Just a
really nice, decent and honest person. I'm sorry
I didn't get more time to work with him but in
the time that I did know him and work with him he
was a great pleasure to work with and just
someone that brought integrity and quality to a
project. Please give his family my most heartfelt
and sincerest condolences. He will be missed. If
there is someone we can send flowers to, I would
    like to do that.

Tribute
  • I just wanted to drop a quick note regarding
Augie.  From day one, Augie made me feel right at
home took me under his wing.  I felt a natural
bond with him he had a way of making everyone
feel special at all times Augie will never be
replaced!  However, I do feel fortunate to have
had the opportunity to meet him be blessed with
his kindness warmth, if only for a short time.
I can honestly say that I am lucky to have had
this opportunity, many people go through their
entire lives without encountering such kindness
and sincerity.  I will remember him as one of the
kindest and caring individuals I have ever met, I
believe he would be proud to be remembered as
    such.

  • I am stunned and very sad. Augie was always so
kind and went out of his way to help. He went
the extra mile without being asked. We have lost
    a wonderful man.

23
Tribute
  • What a loss to his many friends at CSUSB.  Augie
loved this campus and the people who work here.
He was a dear friend to many and will be greatly
missed.  He always had a smile for all and an
    encouraging word.
  • Barbara Hallack

24
Tribute
  • Augie was such a wonderful support to our
students who have disabilities.  He was the first
to supervise our high school students with WORC
and was always willing to do whatever he could to
resolve whatever challenge we faced in
accommodating students.  He will be greatly
    missed.

25
Tribute
  • I met Augie Hartung during a difficult time in
my campaigning, and he was such a great help to
all the candidates in the races.  He showed me
that there are many great people on campus doing
what needs to be done for CSUSB.  I wish this
were not so, but he is definitely a great man
that will be missed, and we at CSUSB have lost
much more than a man.  We've lost a friend.
  • Ruben Diaz, Jr.
  • ASI President

26
Tribute
  • We will miss him dearly at Housing. He was
always willing to go the extra mile and the
    example of true customer service.
  • Louie Alvarado

27
Tribute
  • Please convey my sympathies to Augie's family.
Words cannot express the shock over his loss. Cal
State San Bernardino has truly lost one of the
'good guys.' Augie was always one of the first
guys to help out no matter what the situation.
You never had to ask Augie, he seemed to know or
anticipate. It's people like Augie that make you
appreciate everyday life because they bring with
them a sense of goodness and compassion. We are
truly better people because of folks like Augie.
  • Joe Gutierrez
  • Public Affairs

28
Tribute
  • Augie was a great guy, always ready to help and
looking to help. We are members of the same
church and as you can imagine he was a leader
there.  Whenever a new project unfolded, Augie
was there to lead us.  His ever-present smile
    will be missed.

29
Tribute
  • What a tremendous loss for our campus. Augie
was genuine in offering assistance and always
followed through. He was truly one of our best.
He always helped us in Admissions Student
Recruitment with leaks in the roof to our major
recruitment events. He personally checked to
make sure that we were taken care ofand I was
certainly appreciative. Youll be missed Augie!

30
Tribute
  • Augie was not only a force for good on this
campus, he was also a devout Christian who
believed he was serving God by serving others. He
was always upbeat, always willing to help find a
solution for any problem or solved it himself,
always interested in how a person was feeling or
doing and greeted everyone with a handshake and a
smile. At First Lutheran in Redlands, where he
and Carolyn have been members for many years,
Augie was a coordinator of volunteer services. He
coordinated the annual Apple Butter Festival. He
saw to it that new members were properly greeted
and honored. He helped in the kitchen during
dinners, lunches and breakfasts in the parish
hall. He put in many hours of service on the
church council and various boards and committees.
He also liked old cars and entered his 1960s-era
Pontiac in Route 66 Rendezvous for several years.
His home-made Burma-Shave signs were planted next
to his car at each Rendezvous. Something I read
on the wall of a classroom of a Christian school
in San Bernardino years ago, has stuck with me.
It said, Our life is a gift from God. What we do
with our life is our gift to God. Augies life
was truly a gift to his Creator. We had the honor
and great privilege of knowing Augie and
appreciating the example of a good and faithful
friend and colleague that he set. Our prayers are
with Carolyn, a their daughter Ryan and the
extended Hartung family at the sudden loss of an
    outstanding gentleman, husband and father.

  • I have the greatest fondness for Augie he
never complained, never said a negative word
about anyone, and always got the job done! He
always had a smile, a popsicle and a good word.
The CSUSB community has lost a great role model
    and friend.

  • Augie will be greatly missed by all who knew
him.  He dealt with everyone with warmth and

the example he set every day he was with us.

Tribute
  • My heart is heavy today with the news of Augie's
passing. I along with our campus family will
truly miss him. I will fondly remember the ride
share chats we had on our way to Redlands. Our
talks about family, friends, church, and other
things always made me feel as if we'd been
lifelong friends. Augie's gentle nature and
caring personality will be greatly missed.

Tribute
  • Please give my condolences to Augie's family.  I
am so much in shock to think that I will never
see Augie walking or driving around this campus
again, that I can barely think.  He was always so
kind to me.  I have the utmost greatest respect
for that man.  He was one in a million.  If we
feel the immense loss here, I can imagine how
awful it must be for his family right now.
Please forward to Augie's family.  I'm so sorry
    for their loss.  Very sad.

Tribute
  • The first day I worked here, I was leaving the
parking lots off Coyote Drive to retrieve my new
office keys from Facilities, when my tire went
flat. It happened right next to the information
booth, but they said they could not offer me any
help and to make matters worst my husband was out
of town on business. I stood next to my car
pondering my next move, on this VERY hot
September afternoon, and like a miracle Augie
pulled up behind me and asked me if I needed
help! (mind you this is the first time we had
ever met..) He told me to hang on, he would be
right back, within 10 minutes he came back with
cold drinks and a team to change my tire. I was
SO grateful!!! (now I have AAA) I have never
forgotten his kindness over the years. It was
always a pleasure to see his smiling face at
commencement, twice a year. He was so committed
to this University and our students. He WILL BE
sorely missed. I am so sad.....

Tribute
  • As others have so wonderfully shared, it will
just not be the same without Augie here.  He was
an inspiration to all of us in so many ways and
was a shining example of how we should live our
lives, and how we should treat others. It was
evident in his day to day actions that he truly
had love for every person that he touched.  He
treated everyone with respect, and was always
there to lend a helping hand or just to make the
day brighter for anyone who needed it. During the
hottest summer days, he delivered popsicles to
everyone in athletics, and I am certain to others
enduring the heat.  This morning I have spent
time recollecting my thoughts of a very special
time spent with Augie and a colleague last
Wednesday. After our business was complete, we
spent a few moments in a very special
conversation and time that I will now remember
forever and treasure. Our thoughts and prayers
are with Carolyn, Ryan and other family members.
Thanks Augie, for being such an inspiration and
    example.

Tribute
  • Tribute after tribute to Augie Hartung surely
reveals that he was such a good,  kind, wonderful
and helpful person that there is truly only one
reason that he has been called home.  Heaven was
obviously in need of this kind individual and he
is no doubt continuing his help, with a smile on
his face, in the home of his Heavenly Father.  We
will surely miss him here, but he has been called
to take on more  responsibility and I believe I
can see him smiling down on CSUSB and all of us
    even now.

Tribute
  • I was shocked and greatly saddened to hear the
news of Augie's passing....Augie was one of the
first people I met when I started at Cal State,
and he made me feel at home and welcomed.  He
always had a kind word and a sincere interest in
what I had to say.  When Augie found out that I
am a Lutheran, he invited me to come to his
church and also to visit the church's Apple
Butter festival....he even drew a map on a napkin
so I would know how to find the church!  I will
miss his cheerful smile and friendly greeting in
his many visits to our building.....in fact, I
saw him just last week as we both walked out the
door of the building, and he offered me a ride on
his cart to my meeting. There are precious few
people who go out of their way to share
themselves with others, and Augie was definitely
one of those people.  I miss him already, and I
hope that I can continue his legacy with the way
that I lead my life.  Please know that you are in
my thoughts and prayers during this difficult
    time.

  • I can only echo what everyone else has stated. I
was shocked to hear about Augie's sudden death.
As has been stated by others, he was the epitome
of helpful and responsive, and always with a
smile. I will miss him. My prayers go out to his
    family.

43
Tribute
  • My day began with the grim news of Augie's
passing as I walked from the parking lot to my
office.  I had to ask the individual several
times if the news was some sort of cruel joke.  I
only wish it was.  Augie was a kind and giving
man who loved his wife Carolyn and daughter
Ryan.  He would share with me events and placed
he and his family would travel to.  He shared his
military life experiences as well as his
interests and hobbies.  We share the love of
automobiles and nostalgic stuff and sometimes he
would loan me several of his classic automobile
magazines.  I was a bit envious of his many
experiences and his knowledge of many things.
But Augie had a deep concern and genuine interest
in each of us and each person he met during his
shortened life.  His job was not always filled
with pleasantries but his positive attitude,
concern for people and willingness to help was
unending and greatly appreciated.  He will be
missed. Our life is a gift from God.  What we do
with our life is our gift to God.

Tribute
  • I am not sure how exactly to describe the pain I
feel for the loss of Augie and for the family he
leaves behind on this earth.  He was truly an
example of a man who strived to be like Christ.
Always kind, loving and compassionate.  Seeing
him from a distance would always make me smile,
because I knew he was going to stop and ask me
how I was and/or if he could help me with
anything.  He was genuine.  I feel like we have
lost one of the "Good Ones".  Someone who makes
this world more bearable because of his concern
for others.  My deepest sympathy is with you
during this time of trial.  Please find comfort
in the legacy that Augie leaves behind.

  • In case you didn't have the chance to meet
Augie, but you could have seen him on campus and

with the family and coyote family who have been
    sadden by the loss.

Tribute
  • I was very sadden to hear that Augie is no
longer with us. He was always such a caring
person on this campus in both deeds and words.
I will never forget the time a few years ago on
the day before an Environmental EXPO that my
classroom was filled with boxes to be transported
to the Arena to set up for Environmental EXPO.
The off-campus volunteers did not show to move
the materials. When Augie learned of my
predicament, he quickly assembled several people
to help me. For that act, I will always be
grateful. I join so many others on this campus
in saying that I will truly miss Augies smile
and his commitment to a great campus.

Tribute
  • Today has been a sad day because a beautiful
person is no longer with us.  Every word that has
been said about Augie is so true. Augie and I
shared many wonderful stories, in my office,
about our lives. He was such a pleasant person to
work with. I still have the letter of
encouragement he wrote me after my beloved mother
died in 2003. The last person I saw as I was
leaving work on Friday, January 13, in the
parking lot, was Augie. He wished me a Happy New
Year again and good wishes for the holiday
weekend. Augie was a remarkable person who
understood what it meant to me human and lived
    his life accordingly.

  • I am crying so hard I can't even call your
office.  If I'm this upset, I can only imagine
how you and others over in FS (not to mention his
family) feel.  What a loss for us, but when I'm
done mourning I'm sure I'll rejoice at the joy
and love he brought us.  We were truly blessed to
have known him at all. I had sent you (Tony) and
him a thank you note for our lunch and gifts last
week.  Best regards and a hug,

  • There are people who live their lives and when
they are gone not many recognize their passing.
Others touch lives in a way that will cause them
to always bring fond memories with remembered
stories or their good deeds and how they lived
their lives. I never had the pleasure of meeting
Augie personally but just from all the wonderful
emails sent in honor and respect to him the last
couple days, I know that here was truly a person
that touched many lives and lived his life like
every day was important and every person a
valuable friend. What a wonderful legacy he has
left his family.  I know they will miss him
terribly as all his friends and co-workers will
alike. I didn't know Augie but I certainly feel
like I have been touched just by the remembrance
of him by people here at Cal State the last
couple days.  I, too, am sorry that we have lost
such a wonderful human being.  The world would be
a better place had we more Augies.
