4Surveying a text involves these stages
- 1. Look at the heading, and any sub-headings.
These give a good idea of what the text is about. - 2. If there are any pictures, maps or diagrams,
look at them quickly, too. Do not forget to read
the worlds that go with them. - 3. Quickly read the opening paragraph, the
first sentence of each paragraph, and the last
paragraph. This will give you a good idea of the
gist of the text. - 4. Once you have done all this, you should have a
good idea of what the text is all about.
Surveying a text like this makes this
understanding much easier. After the survey, you
will be ready to read the text properly and you
will find understanding the text is much easier!

- The whole text deals with Sue Hensmans life at
home and her life at SUNY as well as the problems
she is faced with as a freshman, so Chinese
students should try to find out the differences
between their own problems and Sues in order to
have a clear understanding of the life of
