Title: Biomes of Our World
1Biomes of Our World
2Tundra
- Found in most northern climates of the Earth.
- Too cold for many plants or animals to survive
- Land is covered with snow most of the year
- Short summer, animals hibernate to survive the
winter
Bears, reindeer, moose, and birds live in the
tundra Most common tundra plant is the lichen.
3Aquatic
- Type of Aquatic Biomes
- Oceans
- Rivers
- Wetlands
4Forests
- Three main types of Forests
- Rainforest
- Coniferous forest
- Deciduous forest
5Grasslands
- Grassy, windy, semi-dry biome
- Nearly one-fourth of the Earth's land
- Other names Savannah, plains, prairies, pampas
- Small creatures such as grasshoppers and beetles
to large animals like lions, giraffes and
cheetahs
Grasses are the main form of plant life
6Desert
- Hot, dry biomes there are also "cold" deserts
- As there is little rainfall,
few types of plants exist. Some
vegetation includes cactus and the Joshua tree - Animals in the desert
include marmots, prairie dogs and several
varieties of snakes and lizards
Receives less than 25 centimeters of rain a year.
7Rainforest
- Hot and wet for millions of years
- Average temperature year-round is 80 deg.
- Seasons do not change in the tropical rain forest
- Richest source of plant life on earth
- So many different kinds of plants there,
scientists don't even know them all yet
Billions of animals, birds, and insects
Back
8Coniferous
- Has trees that reproduce by dropping cones
- Forest floor has little growth since the large
trees block out sunlight - Birds and other animals live in the trees. Larger
animals live on the forest floor. Deer and bear
make this area their home
Located just south of the Tundra biome.

9Deciduous
- Consist of trees that do not bear cones, contain
seeds that drop on the nearby forest floor - Since they lose their leaves, sunlight can reach
the ground and plants can grow - Weather is moderate. The summers are warm and the
winters are cool
Home to many animals Rainfall tends to be heavy

10Oceans
- Covers over 70 of the earth's surface and are
home to many types
of fish, mammals, and plants - Large salt-water bodies connected across the
earth - Divided into different zones based on sunlight,
temp, water pressure, water movement.
Plants Kelp, phytoplankton Animals lobsters,
crabs, many types of fish, dolphins, whales

11Fresh Water
- Fresh water of the earth is contained in lakes,
ponds, rivers and streams. - Lakes are large bodies of freshwater surrounded
by land, while ponds are smaller bodies of water
surrounded by land - Plants waterlilies, cattails, algae, duckweed,
mosses
Many animals live in rivers and lakes fish,
snakes, frogs, ducks

12Wetlands
- Wetlands are marshy areas where there is much
moisture in the soil. Wetlands are sometimes
covered in water. Swamps, marshes, and bogs are
some of the names used for wetlands. - Climate varies on the location of the specific
wetland. -
Waterfowl, fish, shellfish, many types of
wildlife. Many animals and plants depend on
wetlands for survival
