Incentive Program at High Rates Driving Up
Expected Eight-Year Continuation Rates from 47

Notes ½ man year credit for Aviators, 3 man
year credit for all other participants
Actual continuation rate is based on the
average eight-year continuation rate for officers
in year-groups 1991-1998. Projected 8-year
continuation rate for ROTC graduates contains a
conditional 89 probability adjustment for each
scholarship level.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill Complements GrADSO
  • Quick Overview for Cadets without prior service
  • DoD Policy is codified, but Army policy is still
under development until Aug 1, 2009
  • Must Serve 3 years past commissioning ADSO to be
    eligible for benefits
  • Most likely, these 3 years will be served
    concurrently with all other obligations.
  • Benefits are based on highest public in-state
    undergraduate tuition. For example
  • In Virginia GI Bill would provide 10,048
    (based on VMIs tuition)
  • Darden School at UVA costs 40,500
  • Yellow-Ribbon matching has yet to be codified,
but would require the Veterans Administration
(VA) to reach an agreement with the University of
Virginia (UVA) whereby the VA and UVA would each
pay 15,000 toward the 30,000 not covered by the
    post 9/11 GI Bill.
  • To transfer benefits, must agree to a four year
ADSO from the time of transfer.

Three Things Cadets Must Consider Before Making
This Decision
  • Does he or she intend to stay in through Company
    Command?
  • If so, this option costs nothing.
  • Company command requires 7-8 years of service in
    most cases.
  • What might the four or five years on Reserve
    status look like?
  • If you are in the Selective Reserves
  • 1 Weekend a Month, 2 Weeks a Year ?
  • Potential for Active Duty Activation ?
  • If you are in the IRR Potential for Active Duty
    Activation
  • What are the chances of attending full-time or
fully-funded graduate school if a cadet does not
    participate in this program?
  • Currently about a 1 in 10 chance. (352 positions
    for over 6,000 officers)
  • If you stay through company command, chances
improve to about 1 in 5
  • Compare benefits with New GI Bill
