2Chapter 4 Getting Started
3- There are guidelines and skills for coaching
- Getting a handle on where the person is at
present - Focusing on what he or she wants in the future
- Finding ways to get there
4- Groundwork that must be set before getting into
coaching - You need to build a partnership that will
persist over time - Clear about the assumptions that you and your
PBC bring to the relationship - At some time youll need to reach an agreement
about how the coaching will take place.
5Building the Partnership
6- Coaching is frequently recommended to people who
have obvious potential for growth and promotion
but who need a coachs help to - Reclaim control of their time
- Sharpen their working styles
- Reexamine values
- Move through transitions
- Improve their management skills
- Come to grips with ongoing change
7- Resist the temptation to offer your observations
or advice - Periodically ask for clarification
- Gently ask about inconsistencies
- Try giving a summary of what youre hearing
- Ask if your understanding is accurate
- The goal of listening is to clarify issues and
get an accurate understanding of the PBCs
perspective.
8- Dont be afraid to show curiosity
- Move beyond gathering information and
encouraging the PBC to be more honest and open - Ask curious questions
- Dont ask about issues that are none of your
business - Be supportive
9When People Resist
- acknowledge concerns
- address them
- assure confidentiality
- some expect the coach to criticize or give
advice - explain coaching is a team effort
10CLARIFYING ASSUMPTIONS
- Most people appreciate and frequently enjoy the
coaching process - You are giving me permission to talk about me
you seem really interested.
11ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT COACHING
- Coaching
- is a collaborative partnership between the coach
and person being coached - involves dialogue rather than advice giving,
discipline, or therapy - is built on trust, integrity, self-discipline,
and accountability - is results-oriented, focused on reaching goals
- discusses weaknesses and obstacles but
emphasizes strengths and positive changes - assumes that people are resourceful and able to
set goals and reach them - lets person being coached define and move toward
their goals with Gods help and the coachs
guidance. - helps people reach their peak performance
- assumes that life is integrated We cant assume
that someones work, family life, personal
history, spirituality, or lifestyle can be put
into neat but separate compartments. - Embraces change as something that is always
occurring, sometimes confusing, often positive,
and usually growth producing.
12RULE 1 God is sovereign RULE 2 Everything
changes except rule number 1
13- Change happens so continually that we often miss
it - In the time it takes you to read one page
- The earth moved approximately 2,200 miles
- 10 quarts of blood pumped through your body
- 16 babies were born in the United States
- 9 Americans died
14A productive coaching relationship begins with
two people with fires in their bellies one who
wants desperately to move forward and another who
yearns to help that person make the journey. -
James A. Belasco
15Ask the other person to tell his or her story.
Whats going on in your life? or What would
you like to be different in your life? Your top
priority is to listen carefully, respectfully,
and with genuine interest.

17Jesus Christ is the axle it all revolves around
Him. We commit all of our coaching (and our
lives) to his lordship and direction. Scripture
reading, prayer and worship.
We seek to be clear on our values, politely
declining to coach anyone who wants our services
for the purpose of developing behaviors or
lifestyles that are clearly inconsistent with
Christian principles.
18Issues
- PBCs concerns or issues

where they want to be - Focuses on where your PBC is now

they are now - Asking questions

21- Set goals that are realistic, specific and
measurable - Such as
- Spend one hour a week working with a coworker
- Spend half-hour reading to your kids
- You can tell after a few days if the person is
reaching specific goals - Goal-setting is a small part of developing a
broader overall plan of action.

23- One of your greatest tasks as a coach is to help
others uncover, face, and get past any attitudes
and actions that get in the way of progress - Sometimes we move from obstacles back to issues
- Take a fresh look
