Prime Movers in Motion at Area Schools
Weve learned how to record and use different
types of cameras, said Quincy Ford, a junior at
Friendship PCS Collegiate Academy. Ford, who
expressed interest in pursuing TV broadcasting,
said his current participation gets you prepared
for college so you can successfully major in the
subject when you go.
Terry Johnson, a Friendship senior voiced her
contentment with having 2 WJLA vets help out in
her class It means a lot that theyre coming
out here on their personal time to teach us
something new. Johnson, who admittedly did not
know much about production plans on becoming a
music or television studio producer.
I think they care by them being here and
teaching us. It makes it more fun,
interestingAndrea Richardson, Friendship
senior.
Emilee Rauschenberger, Cesar Chavez instructor
and Newspaper Advisor, said the paper is
positive outlet for the students to express
their creative side. It becomes something they
take ownership of.

We knew the volunteers had done Ballou H.S.,
so we felt good about them coming here. Im
quite sure they dont go to every school, noted
Passion McIlwain, Friendship senior. She credits
them with helping to strengthen her
script-writing skills.
The kids are fun to work with, said Brendan
Palmer, a junior Journalism major at George
Washington University. We have a lot of freedom
with how we teach them journalism. In helping
Cesar Chavez students with their news Web site,
Palmer gets just as excited as the kids with the
finished product and that we have kept this
small group interested and coming back.
I like writing because I get to express my
feelings in the paper, Ashley Craft remarked.
She also likes the attention from teachers
seeing my articles on the Web site and
congratulating me. The tenth grader at Cesar
Chavez Parkside Middle And High School has
noticed improvements in her writing skills and
credits volunteers with backing her development
in sculpting story ideas and interviewing.
Courtney Young, a Friendship senior considering
the broadcast profession, is already thinking of
he importance of networking. Its good to have
the professional journalists around in case you
need them in your future career. We have a good
relationship. They discuss the nuances of
broadcasting, like hand placement, as well as
college. When they talk about how their careers
and how sometimes they didnt get much sleep, I
know my schedule will be demanding, said Young.
