Dr. Martin Luther King was a great leader in the
United States. Dr. King was born in Atlanta,
Georgia, in 1929. After he got married, he moved
to Alabama. He found a job in a church. During
that time, in many areas of the United states,
black and white students did not study in the
same school. They were separated. Black people
also had to sit in the back of a bus, and they
had to give up their seat to white people. In
public places such as parks, restaurants, etc.
blacks had to use separate restrooms. Many
restaurant owners did not allow black people to
eat there.
47
48
Dr. King fought for the right of blacks and
other Americans. He was in jail many times
because of his activities. In 1964, the United
States Congress passed a law and gave equality to
all Americans. In 1983, Dr. Martin Luther
Kings birthday (January 15) became a national
holiday.
