2
Todays Class
  • Introduction to Social Service Organisations
  • Purpose
  • Concepts/Definitions
  • Key Points

3
INTRODUCTION
  • Social service agencies are in the business of
providing services from the cradle to the grave
or from the womb to the tomb.
  • In our last class together we spoke about
  • Issues/challenges affecting us or that we were
aware of in different agencies or organisations.
  • The need for managerial competence in the
    delivery of social services.

4
PURPOSE
  • The purpose of social service agencies or human
service organisations is to work with people
and in some cases for people to assist them
in meeting their basic needs (food, shelter etc.)

5
DEFINITION
  • ORGANISATION
  • An organisation is a social arrangement which
pursues collective goals, which controls its own
performance, and which has a boundary separating
    it from its environment.
  • (http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organisation)

6
ADMINISTRATION
  • Trecker (1971) --administration in the social
services is seen as a process of working with
people in ways that release and relate their
energies so that they use all available resources
to accomplish the purpose of providing community
services and programs (Harleigh B. Trecker,
    Social Work Administration Principles
    Practices. pg. 18)

7
KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER
  • Organisation and administration of social
services is a dynamic process based on an
    appreciation and understanding of human
    behaviour, human relations and human
    organisations. (Trecker, pg 19)

8
POINTS CONTINUED..
  • Administration is a continuous, dynamic process.
  • The process of administration is set into motion
in order to accomplish a common purpose or goal.
  • ( Trecker, pg 24)

9
Final Point.
  • The quality of service that is given to
clients/persons who access the services of our
agencies or organisations is influenced by the
type of administration or administrator or
employees that are working there. The two
entities are inter-related and go hand in hand,
    quality service and administration.
