Acting Internship
  • You pick the field
  • Must have an advanced degree of responsibility
    above that of a MS3
  • Lots of options locally
  • If you choose one at another med school (rarely
    ok outside of academia)
  • Need approval from the UTMB department
  • Might be called subinternship

Emergency Medicine
  • Lots of options locally
  • Rules for elsewhere
  • Selective can be done at any institution with an
    established EM residency program
  • Selective can be done at a university or medical
    school based emergency department or community
    emergency department anywhere in the U.S. with a
    supervising staff ED physician sponsoring the
    student.
  • All EM clerkships must include some degree of
    exposure to pediatric patients.
  • Selective cannot be done at an ambulatory acute
    care facility/clinic where EMS are not allowed to
    bring patients.
  • All students must provide procedure and case
    logs.
  • Students may do a pediatric EM rotation at a
    large Childrens hospital with an ER.
  • Students may do a rotation in the ER at any Level
    1 trauma center.
  • Selective should allow students to evaluate new
    patients independently with subsequent faculty
    oversight.

Neurology selective
  • A little tighter locally slots in Austin,
    Galveston, St. Lukes
  • Any medical school Neurology course
  • Community Preceptor
  • The neurology selective must accomplish the
    following objectives
  • Perform a neurologically oriented history
  • Perform a neurological physical exam
  • Use information obtained from the history and
    physical exam to localize the lesion
  • Synthesize the above information to formulate a
    pathophysiological/etiological differential
    diagnosis and plan
  • Diagnoses encountered by the medical student
    should span the entire neuraxis

BSHSBasic Science and Humanities Selective
  • Pre-existing courses available
  • 50 of students derive their own project
  • Proposal form available on the web
  • Dont leave planning to the last minute
  • Must write a paper

ACSAmbulatory Community Selective
  • You choose the field
  • Must be ambulatory not patients in a hospital
    bed must be in the community, i.e. not at UTMB
  • Objectives
  • to learn about the practice of a chosen medical
    discipline and to practice that disciplines
    diagnostic and therapeutic skills in a Texas
    community setting.
  • identify characteristics of practice in the
    selected community scope of practice in the
    selected community potential lifestyle of a
    physician in the selected community.
  • identify the roles practicing physicians play in
    a community, such as patient advocate, public or
    community health monitor, or community leader.
  • learn more about issues of practice management
    and health care systems in communities, such as
    billing issues, professional communication with
    therapists, telemedicine, rural medicine, and
    accessing systems of support for patients with
    special needs.

  • Receive initial schedule on Monday April 27
  • Add/Drop Process
  • Begins Tuesday, April 28
  • Continues for remainder of the academic year

A Word about the ACS
  • Form in packet for geographic site preference
  • You still need to ENROLL!!!!
  • Through E-connect before April 3, by C form after
    that
  • You may make changes to ACS courses (add, drop,
    or change site preference) up to 60 days before
    the rotation begins
  • If you would like to make a change gt 60 days in
    advance, please contact Lisa Mignerey at 747-1850
    or lmmigner_at_utmb.edu.
  • Site confirmation will be e-mailed to you
    approximately one week prior to the start of the
    course.
  • Laptop computers will be available upon request
    to students assigned to non-commutable sites.

The ICEEIntegrated Curriculum Evaluation Exercise

  • 85 of available dates are in period 1
  • Hand in form if you cannot take it block 1
