NOTES
  • In further questioning on the health issues, they
were ranked as  (1) weight (2) health (3) cancer
    (4) heart  Nothing else was considered as really
a concern when evaluating the healthiness of
food.  With respect to potatoes, there was no
real association with anything other than weight.
Surprisingly, potatoes were viewed in equal
proportion as a fattening food and as a weight
control food.  Fattening because of all the
butter and sour cream you put on it, though those
who viewed it as fattening really didnt think
about taking the fattening toppings off. Potatoes
were just fattening.  They also indicated that
health issues were critical to them depending on
their specific family history and challenges.
  • In evaluating the relative acceptability of
modification sources for food, the relative
    perceptions/acceptability on a 10 point scale
    would be approximately
  • Selective Breeding (10)  Intragenic (spike at 7
and most people had accepted it at the 5 range),
Chemical additives (4) and Transgenic (everyone
    was in the 2-1 range).
  • When it was explained that selective breeding and
intragenic were exactly the same except that one
takes years and years to complete, they said no
matter.. they stood by their ratings with very
strong feelings, but could not explain why other
than they didnt like the idea.
  • Omega III, Vitamin E, and Dark Green seem to be
key buzzwords.  Energy should be added to the
    Health list.

What are the relative perceptions, preferences
and problems with modified foods being developed
in the following ways
  • Selective Breeding
  • Chemical additives
  • Intragenetics (modification of the plants
    natural DNA)
  • Transgenetics (introductions of foreign DNA
    (viral, bacterial or other species)
