MEDICAID
  • Pays for medical care for those meet income and
    asset standards
  • administered differently in each state
  • jointly funded by state and federal government

COBRA 1985
  • Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation act of
    1985
  • Allows families or individuals to continue group
    health insurance for 18 months after the loss of
    a job

MEDICAID
  • Each state has their own financial eligibility
  • Based on a percentage of the federal poverty
    level
  • Adjusted for family size
  • Spenddown- a program in which Medicaid will pay
    when you have paid or incurred a specific amount
    of bills

APPLYING FOR PROGRAMS
  • Always apply even if you think you may not be
    eligible
  • It is not always possible to determine if you are
    eligible over the phone
  • Appeal if you are denied as sometimes errors are
    made

APPLYING FOR ASSISTANCE
  • By applying, even if you are denied, you let
    administrators know what types of people need
    services
  • You may need the denial from one program to
    access other programs
  • May allow you to access charity funds at a
    hospital

KEEP HOSPITAL DOCTORS INFORMED
  • Let your doctor/hospital know about the programs
    for which you have applied
  • You may need information from your doctor to
    complete an application for a specific program
  • If you have problems paying, tell the hospital
    and they can set up a payment plan

  • certain metabolic problems
  • urinary system impairments

  • birth certificate
  • tax forms
  • last two paycheck stubs
  • social security card
  • verification of residency - something with your
    address on it
  • medical information- report with childs diagnosis

FILING SYSTEMS FOR YOUR HOME
  • Keep files for
  • medical reports
  • school reports
  • funding information
  • each doctor- after appointment file bills when
    insurance or other source pays, match up the
    paperwork

SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME- SSI
  • Benefits for disabled who have limited income and
    resources
  • must have marked and serve functional limitations
  • disability must be expected to last at least 12
    months or result in childs death
  • parent receives monthly check to be used toward
    childs medical needs

  • a network of 22 hospitals that provide expert,
    no-cost orthopedic and burn care to children

PUBLIC HEALTH CLINICS
  • May be a city, county, or regional health
    department
  • may provide routine pediatric care,
    immunizations, various types of clinics, dental
    care, or car seat programs
  • call the health department in your area to find
    out what services they provide to children with
    special needs

ILLINOIS COMPRHENSIVE HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN
  • ICHIP - a state health insurance program that
    provides coverage for eligible Illinois residents
    who are unable to purchase health insurance
    privately because of a health condition or
    disability
  • Premiums paid by enrolled persons cover
    administrative expenses and a significant portion
    of medical claims.

MEDICAL DEDUCTIONS ON FEDERAL TAX FORMS
  • Allows deductions that are more than 7.5 of your
    income
  • keep careful records of medical expenses
    including direct costs, such as payments to the
    MD and indirect costs such as travel
