schools in Alberta and, indeed in all of Canada

    international image
  • to attract scholars from the national as well
    as the international scene

11
Impetus for current collecting
  • 1999 new Director appointed
  • University Library no longer distinguishing
    feature of a research university
  • Primary resources are now a universitys most
    important research assets
  • Expanded mandate of University Archives
  • Established the Library and Archives at the
    Museum of the Regiments
  • Aggressively sought out new acquisitions
  • Resources will follow need
  • Academic Plan 2002

12
The Challenges and the Rewards
  • Storage space, experienced staff
  • Pressure to accept records
  • Donations tax receipts
  • Records processing priorities follow donor
    demands
  • Re-orientation of University Archives resources
  • Strong and important collection of private
    records
  • Local, national and international scholars
  • Universities have an increasingly important role
to play in preserving private records
