    and terms used in the addictions program
  • After this training session a student shall be
    able to
  • Describe commonly used terms and definitions of
    the Coast Guard Addictions Program

CDAR
  • Command Drug and Alcohol Representative
  • Unit member who serves as consultants and
    advisors to their parent commands in the
    administration of the unit addictions program.

Addiction
  • Compulsive or repetitive behavior in a
    relationship with substances or experiences, such
    as
  • alcohol
  • drugs
  • caffeine
  • food
  • gambling
  • exercise

Abuse
  • The use of alcohol or other drugs which
    interferes with
  • duty
  • health
  • personal behavior
  • family
  • community
  • safety

Alcohol dependence
  • A chronic disease involving the repetitive
    ingestion of alcohol which interferes with the
  • health
  • safety
  • job performance
  • or social behaviors
  • of the user

Alcohol related situation
  • Any situation where
  • undesirable behavior or performance occurred and
  • alcohol was involved or present but not
    considered a causative factor
  • Commands shall not use the term situation when
    the behavior clearly meets the criteria for an
    alcohol incident

Alcohol Incident
  • Alcohol is a Significant or Causative factor
    resulting in
  • loss in ability to perform duties
  • discredit upon the service
  • violation of the UCMJ, federal state or local law
  • - Alcohol must be ingested
  • - Member need not be found guilty

Five Levels of Care
  • Level 0.5 Early Intervention
  • Level I Outpatient Services (OP)
  • Level II Intensive Outpatient Services (IOP)
  • Level III Residential / Inpatient Services
  • Level IV Medically-Managed (DETOX)

CAAC
  • Navy Counseling and Assistance Center
  • Provides
  • screening services
  • outpatient counseling
  • aftercare support
  • individual and family referral services

Detoxification
  • Medically supervised process of eliminating
    substances from the body
  • Inpatient setting
  • Normally 3-7 days

Intoxication
  • A state of impaired mental or physical
    functioning resulting from the presence of
    alcohol or other drugs in the body.

Rehabilitation
  • Restoration to a normal or optimum state of
    health and constructive activity by medical
    treatment, physical and/or psychological therapy

Treatment
  • Includes inpatient/outpatient medical treatment,
    counseling, or other appropriate care
    administrated to recovering addicts or abusers in
    an effort to redirect life patterns and attitudes.
