Water to Wine
  • John 2 (Not in Matthew because Cana is in
Galillee of the Gentiles. Matthew is writing to
    Jewish followers)

8
John 21-11 (NASB)
  • 1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of
Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there 2 and
both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the
wedding. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of
Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." 4 And
Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have
to do with us? My hour has not yet come." 5 His
mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says
to you, do it." 6 Now there were six stone
waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of
purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons
each. 7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots
with water." So they filled them up to the brim.
8 And He said to them, "Draw some out now and
take it to the headwaiter ." So they took it to
him. 9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which
had become wine, and did not know where it came
from (but the servants who had drawn the water
knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,
10 and said to him, "Every man serves the good
wine first, and when the people have drunk
freely, then he serves the poorer wine but you
have kept the good wine until now." 11 This
beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of
Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His
    disciples believed in Him.

9
What is the Point?
  • Point.Jesus can provide not just what is needed,
but what is pleasing and brings honor.
  • He saved the best for last.

10
Man with leprosy
  • Matt 81-4 (NASB)
  • When Jesus came down from the mountain, large
crowds followed Him. 2 And a leper came to Him
and bowed down before Him, and said, "Lord, if
You are willing, You can make me clean." 3 Jesus
stretched out His hand and touched him, saying,
"I am willing be cleansed." And immediately his
leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him,
"See that you tell no one but go, show yourself
to the priest and present the offering that Moses
commanded, as a testimony to them."

11
Untouchable
  • Jesus was
  • Willing to touch the untouchable
  • Love the unloved
  • And heal the terminally ill
  • He came for this very reason
  • Matthew 912
  • But when He heard this, He said, "It is not
those who are healthy who need a physician, but
    those who are sick
  • Matthew 817
  • This was to fulfill what was spoken through
Isaiah the prophet "HE HIMSELF TOOK OUR
INFIRMITIES AND CARRIED AWAY OUR DISEASES."

12
Centurion Servant
  • Matt 85-13 (NASB)
  • And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion
came to Him, imploring Him, 6 and saying, "Lord ,
my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully
tormented." 7 Jesus said to him, "I will come
and heal him." 8 But the centurion said, "Lord ,
I am not worthy for You to come under my roof,
but just say the word, and my servant will be
healed. 9 "For I also am a man under authority,
with soldiers under me and I say to this one,
'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he
comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does
it." 10 Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled
and said to those who were following, "Truly I
say to you, I have not found such great faith
with anyone in Israel. 11 "I say to you that many
will come from east and west, and recline at the
table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the
kingdom of heaven 12 but the sons of the kingdom
will be cast out into the outer darkness in that
place there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth." 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go
it shall be done for you as you have believed."
And the servant was healed that very moment .

13
Jesus Authority
  • Centurion over 100 men
  • He knew about authority
  • He trusted Jesus authority
  • There was power in His Word
  • When we have faith, God can speak a Word

14
Peters Mother-In-Law
  • Matthew 814-15
  • When Jesus came into Peter's home , He saw his
mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever.
15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her
and she got up and waited on Him.

15
Touching the Masses
  • Mt 816
  • When evening came, they brought to Him many who
were demon-possessed and He cast out the spirits
with a word, and healed all who were ill.

16
Isaiah 426-7
  • Jesus fulfilled the prophecy
  • And I will appoint you as a covenant to the
people, As a light to the nations, 7 To open
blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the
dungeon, And those who dwell in darkness from
    the prison.

17
Paralyzed
  • Matt 91-8
  •  Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over the sea
and came to His own city. 2 And they brought to
Him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their
faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Take
courage, son your sins are forgiven." 3 And
some of the scribes said to themselves, "This
fellow blasphemes." 4 And Jesus knowing their
thoughts said, "Why are you thinking evil in your
hearts? 5 "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins
are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, and walk'?
6 "But so that you may know that the Son of Man
has authority on earth to forgive sins"then He
said to the paralytic, "Get up, pick up your bed
and go home." 7 And he got up and went home.
8 But when the crowds saw this, they were
awestruck , and glorified God, who had given such
    authority to men.

18
Paralysis-Sin?
  •  If the man is a paralytic, why does Jesus
    forgive him of his sin?
  • His real disease is a spiritual one
  • Physical diseases sometimes result from a
spiritual problem (Sin is the root, our own or
    someone elses)
  • Forgiveness of sin brings healing to the whole
    person, not just the body

19
The Pharisees Response
  • 93-5
  • And some of the scribes said to themselves, "This
fellow blasphemes." 4 And Jesus knowing their
thoughts said, "Why are you thinking evil in your
hearts? 5 "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins
are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, and walk'?
    Matt 93-5 (NASB)

20
Evil in our hearts
  • What was evil in their response?
  • Werent they trying to protect Gods image?
  • The problem was doubt
  • When we doubt God we are not having faith
  • Faith pleases God. Without faith it is impossible
    to please Him (Heb. 11)
  • When we encounter Gods providence, are we more
apt to praise God or find fault?
  • Are we more inclined to believe or doubt?
  • God does not need our protection (Only impotent
    gods need this)

21
Dead and Gone
  • Matt 91-19/23-26
  •  While He was saying these things to them, a
synagogue official came and bowed down before
Him, and said, "My daughter has just died but
come and lay Your hand on her, and she will
live." 19 Jesus got up and began to follow him,
    and so did His disciples.
  • 23 When Jesus came into the official 's house,
and saw the flute-players and the crowd in noisy
disorder, 24 He said, "Leave for the girl has
not died, but is asleep." And they began laughing
at Him. 25 But when the crowd had been sent out,
He entered and took her by the hand, and the girl
got up. 26 This news spread throughout all that
    land.

22
Just when you think it is over
  • The girl was dead
  • The disorder was the result of professional
mourners. She had been dead some time.
  • How do we know?
  • A crowd had gathered
  • The professional wailers had come
  • The orchestra had also arrived.
  • It was the funeral time

23
No laughing matter
  • When Jesus says that she is sleeping, the
    attendants laugh.
  • Why did they laugh?
  • Odd behavior for a funeral-should be solemn.
  • Fear causes nervous laughtera nervous response.
  • How would you feel if you were at the casket of a
departed loved one and a guy came up and said
She isnt dead. Ill wake her up?

24
Death Swallowed in Victory
  • He entered and took her by the hand, and the
girl got up. 26 This news spread throughout all
    that land
  • When Jesus takes our hand, even death can not
hold us. He will one day wake us up from our
    sleep.

25
Sick Woman-Issue of blood
  • In the midst of the previous scene, another
    miracle occurs.
  • 920-22
  • And a woman who had been suffering from a
hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him
and touched the fringe of His cloak 21 for she
was saying to herself, "If I only touch His
garment, I will get well." 22 But Jesus turning
and seeing her said, "Daughter, take courage
your faith has made you well." At once the woman
    was made well.

26
Desperate Faith
  • If only..
  • Touching Jesus is all it takes
  • Risk of rejection. It was a gamble of faith
  • She was unclean, He was spotless
  • In desperation she grabbed the fringe (Tzit-Tzit)
    of his garment.
  • His power is complete and sufficient

27
2 Blind Men
  • 927-31
  •  As Jesus went on from there, two blind men
followed Him, crying out, "Have mercy on us, Son
of David!" 28 When He entered the house, the
blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to
them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"
They said to Him, "Yes, Lord." 29 Then He
touched their eyes, saying, "It shall be done to
you according to your faith." 30 And their eyes
were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them "See
that no one knows about this!" 31 But they went
out and spread the news about Him throughout all
    that land.

28
The Real Question
  • Do you believe
  • Why did He ask them? Hadnt they already
demonstrated that they believed by asking?
  • Asking does not mean believing.
  • Jesus wants us to commit to faith-Speak it before
others..this is where the risk is.
  • We receive according to our measure of faith.

29
The Mute Prisoner of Evil
  • 932-34
  •  As they were going out, a mute, demon-possessed
man was brought to Him. 33 After the demon was
cast out, the mute man spoke and the crowds were
amazed, and were saying, "Nothing like this has
ever been seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees
were saying, "He casts out the demons by the
ruler of the demons Matt 932-34 (NASB)

30
Be Quiet in the Name of Satan
  • His muteness was a result of demonic oppression
    from within
  • When Satan get a stronghold, he is able to shut
    us up.
  • When Jesus sets us free, Satan cant keep us
    quiet.
  • 1 Cor 123
  • Therefore I make known to you, that no one
speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is
accursed" and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord,"
    except by the Holy Spirit.

31
Withered
  • Matt 129-14
  • 9 And departing from there, He went into their
synagogue. 10 And behold, there was a man with a
withered hand. And they questioned Him, saying,
"Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"in order
that they might accuse Him. 11 And He said to
them, "What man shall there be among you, who
shall have one sheep, and if it falls into a pit
on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it, and
lift it out? 12 "Of how much more value then is a
man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do
good on the Sabbath." 13 Then He said to the
man, "Stretch out your hand!" And he stretched it
out, and it was restored to normal, like the
other. 14 But the Pharisees went out, and
counseled together against Him, as to how they
    might destroy Him.

32
The Lord of the Sabbath
  • Jesus was concerned more about the person than a
    regulation.
  • God desires mercy not Sacrifice
  • We are a withered people
  • When we reach out what the world has withered,
Jesus reaches out and restores us.

33
Conclusions
  • We serve a God that proved He was God by His
    power over sickness and death.
  • Only God can raise the dead.
  • Death is in His hands
  • There were many witnesses to support the claim
  • If the power to heal is in Jesus and Jesus is in
us, then the power of God to heal is in us.
  • He is still God, our healer.
