3Introduction
- We will talk deeply on 8 questions
- 1)Where can we find woodland in Hong Kong today?
- 2)What are the characteristics of woodland in
Hong Kong? - 3)What are the problems of woodland in Hong Kong?
- 4)What are the causes of the problems?
- 5)How do these problems affect our lives?
- 6)Are we able to solve the problems?
- 7)What is the best use of our woodland?
- 8)How can we help protect our woodland and
tropical rainforests?
4Where can we find woodland in Hong Kong today?
- Shing Mun Country Park (? ? ? ? ? ? )
- The richest woodlands can be found in Shing Mun
Valley at the northern end of the reservoir
facing Lead Mine Pass. - Since the 1970's, many representative flora
species have been planted here. At the last count
in 2000, this green sanctuary boasted more 7,000
trees belonging to over 270 species native to
Hong Kong or Southern China. Among them are many
rare and endangered species. Indeed, the
arboretum plays a vital role in flora
conservation. - Ecological Highlights
- Shing Mun Country Park is famous for its profuse
woodlands. In front of the lake one finds the
original site of the old Tai Wai village. Nearby
is a fung shui wood harbouring magnificent old
trees belonging to more than 70 species. - Public Transport Information
- Shing Mun Reservoir
- In Siu Wo Street, Tsuen Wan, take green minibus
no. 82 to Pineapple Dam of Shing Mun Reservoir,
or take bus no. 40X, 46X, 47X, 48X, 73X or 278X
to Ho Fung College on Wo Yi Hop Road. After
getting off the bus, walk along Shing Mun Road
for 30 minutes to Pineapple Dam. From there, it
is a 20-minute walk to the main dam and barbecue
area.
5Where can we find woodland in Hong Kong today?
- Pokfulam Country Park (? ? ? ? ? ? ?)
- The 2.2 km Pokfulam Native Tree Walk features
Hong Kong's native plant species. Winding along
Lugard Road by the Peak Galleria, this short
route takes about 45 minutes to complete. - the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation
Department has put in continued efforts to green
the valley. Over the year, a great number of
introduced species have been planted - Peak Trail
- Take bus no. 15 or 515 or green minibus no. 1 to
the Peak.
6Where can we find woodland in Hong Kong today?
- Hong Kong Park
- The park site is quite steep but amid the old
vegetation are good specimens of large trees,
which were originally planted by the military.
Most of the trees have been retained during the
development - Forsgate Conservatory( ?????)
- The Forsgate Conservatory comprises three
sections, namely the "Display Plant House", the
"Dry Plant House" and the "Humid Plant House".
Adjustable environmental control equipment is
installed in the Conservatory to provide a range
of climatic conditions so that everything from a
tropical rain forest environment to an arid
desert condition can be simulated. - Vegetation of the Edward Youde Aviary (????? ????
) - Some mature trees existed in the valley before
the aviary was built and the majority of these
were preserved during the construction work. - Many new trees have been planted but it will take
several years before these mature to enhance the
tree canopy. - Transportation
- MTR Admiralty Station C1 exit
- BUS 1, 1M, 3B, 5, 5A,
- PLB 1A, 24A
7What are the causes of the problems?
- The first reason is for lands. Hong Kong is a
small place but there are many people. We want
more houses and roads for improving our living
conditions. Therefore, people cut many trees.
8What are the causes of the problems?
- 2) The second reason is hill fire. In winter and
autumn, the weather in Hong Kong is dry so fire
is easily caused. It is very difficult to put out
fire at a forest because fire can spread quickly
by wind. Therefore, fire can destroy many trees
in a short period of time.
9How do the problems affect our lives?
- Logging and burning of trees can cause many
problems that would affect our live
10How do the problems affect our lives?
- 1) Climatic Change
- The most serious consequence is that of climate
change due to the loss of trees. Earth has an
atmosphere which contains a variety of gases ,
one of these gases in Earths atmosphere is
carbon dioxide. If there are additional
greenhouse gases, there will be a gradual
increase in temperature on Earths surface. This
could lead to changes in weather patterns, sea
levels, and other cycles in nature that directly
affect our life . - The only way to help moderate the levels of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is through plant
life. Alive plants and trees absorb the carbon
dioxide from decaying plants and trees. With a
decrease in trees and plant life (due to
deforestation), it is much harder to moderate
these levels.
11How do the problems affect our lives?
- 2) Erosion
- Although these forests assume to be lush and
full, the underlying soils are very poor, almost
all the nutrients being bound up in the
vegetation. The problem is that once forests have
been cut down, essential nutrients are washed out
of the soil all-together. This leads to soil
erosion.
12How do the problems affect our lives?
- 3) Poor air quality
- Burning the trees puts a great amount of ashes
into the atmosphere . As the forests have been
cleared , the rate of photosynthesis (the trees
absorb carbon dioxide and release a large amount
of oxygen to support the living things .)become
lower , so that causes poor air quality.
13Are we able to solve the problems?
- Ans Yes.
- Problem1) Cut trees.
- Solution1) We must use two sides of each paper.
Dont waste paper. - Solution2) The buildings can be built higher to
save land.
14Are we able to solve the problems?
- Problem2) Hill fire.
- Solution1) In Ching Ming festival, we must put
out the fire after worshiping the ancestors. - Solution2) Dont leave lighted fire after having
barbecue.
15How can we help protect our woodland and tropical
rainforests?
- We can learn more about the rainforests. (visit
the websites about the environment organizations,
read books about the rainforests in the world
etc), then we know how to take action to protect
them. - 2) We can plant local species of trees.
16How can we help protect our woodland and tropical
rainforests?
- We can support environment organizations.lte.g.
World Wildlife Fund, green power and green peace
etc...gt (e.g. donating money, being volunteers
etc) - We can look for ways to reduce the paper use.
(Try using both sides of every sheet of paper,
using recycled paper and reusing envelopes etc...)
17How can we help protect our woodland and tropical
rainforests?
- We should not take plants or pick flowers from
anywhere in the wild environment. - 6) We can think carefully before we decide to buy
or use items made from woods . If you do decide
to buy them, look for woods that are marked with
a Forest Stewardship Council label.
18How can we help protect our woodland and tropical
rainforests?
- 7) We can recycle your used papers. (Old
newspaper and books etc...) - 8) We can use cloth napkins rather than
disposable napkins.
19What are the problems of woodland in Hong Kong?
- Cut too many trees.
- 2) Hill fire.
