Our schools name is Chouhada Annani
(chouhada means martyrs Annani is the
surname of 4 brothers who died during the
Algerian liberation war 1954-1962 in Bejaia). It
is a co-educational secondary school. It has 1005
students and 58 teachers. It is located in Bejaia,
a large city 240 kms east of Algiers, the capital
of Algeria. It was opened in 1979.
16Places of Interest
There are many places of interest in our
community, among them A large park called
Gouraya Park . Inside it you can find Cap Carbon
which is said to be the highest natural
lighthouse, and Pic des Singes, a high mountain
which overlooks the city of Bejaia and the sea,
the Casbah, an ancient big citadel, and the
Marveillous cave in Aokas, 40 kms east of Bejaia.
17The Casbah
- It is an ancient big citadel or fortification
situated in the center of Bejaia. It was built
with red bricks by the Sultan Nasser, during the
period of the Hammadites for military purposes,
to protect the city from invasions. Later, it
became a university where eminent scientists like
Ibn Khaldun who wrote El Mukadima( an
introduction to history ) taught. Many Europeans
came also there to acquire knowledge. A mosque
was also built inside in the year 1212 by the
Turks.
18Weather
- In Summer, the weather in Bejaia is very hot. It
is mild in Fall, cold and rainy and sometimes
snowy in winter, very fine in Spring( neither
cold nor hot). - The best season for visiting Bejaia is summer,
because it has very fine sandy beaches where you
can swim.
19Family Life and Customs Dressing
- Young people in our community wear fashionable
clothes ( jeans, T shirts, sports shoes) - Most adults prefer wearing classical clothes.
- Many old people still wear traditional clothes(
The djellaba, chechia and burnous). - Women generally wear modern clothes when they go
out, and traditional clothes at home.

20Foods and Recipes
- The most popular and favorite type of food is
Couscous which is prepared with meat or
chicken, rolled couscous and vegetables. It is
the main dish of many occasions, especially
weddings. Many people like also preparing
traditional bread Galette and traditional
cakes that are very delicious. These are served
for guests and during marriages and religious
celebrations mainly LAid which is celebrated
just after the fasting month.

21Ways of Greeting
- People in my community greet one another
depending on the type of relationship. - If very close, they kiss one another or shake
hands, if not, they just say good morning or
raise the right hand without meeting. - But girls and women prefer kisses.
22The Role of the Family
- Founding a family is very important in our
community. Every young man or girl must found a
family to be well considered. - The family is the basis of education and social
values that are taught to children. - In the past, it was the husband who provided for
the family, the breadwinner. - But today many couples work and share all the
family tasks and duties.
23Results
- Students-We have a lot in common, we enjoy a lot
of the same music and clothes. Some of our
customs and holidays are different. - Teachers-US students did not know much about
Algeria and now do. Algerian students improved
English. Teachers connected with each other - Congressman Mike Rogers and US Ambassador to
Algeria Robert Ford major supporters of this 1st
education project.
