3
Questions about Process
  • Was Pauls Theology systematic and single in
focus or, did it develop new insights as it went
    along?
  • Did he have CORE beliefs that remained constant
from the beginning of his writings all the way
    through to the end?
  • How did his life experiences get expressed in his
understanding of God and his writings?

4
God The Center

  • Foundation? Eph. 220-22
  • God as both foundation and house Romans 1136,
    from him -- 1 Cor. 86

  • God as Father - Romans 815, Gal. 46, 2 Cor.

6
Humanity and Its Need
  • Creation, Fall and Consequences Romans 512-21
    819-23
  • Human aspects of nature
  • Flesh,
  • Body
  • mind, heart, soul, and spirit.

7
The Flesh
  • 1. Sarx -- The stuff of which we are made
  • 1 Cor. 616
  • Or do you not know that the one who joins
himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For
He says, "The two shall become one FLESH."
  • 1 Cor. 1539
  • All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is
one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts,
and another flesh of birds, and another of fish.

8
The Flesh
  • Ephes. 531 For this reason a man shall leave
his father and mother and shall be joined to his
wife, and the two shall become one FLESH.
  • Ephes. 612
  • For our struggle is not against flesh and
blood, but against the rulers, against the
powers, against the world forces of this
darkness, against the spiritual forces of
    wickedness in the heavenly places.
  • 2 Cor. 127
  • Because of the surpassing greatness of the
revelations, for this reason, to keep me from
exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in
the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment meto
    keep me from exalting myself!

9
The Flesh
  • Ephes. 215
  • by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which
is the Law of commandments contained in
ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the
two into one new man, thus establishing peace,
  • Col. 124
  • Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,
and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His
body, which is the church, in filling up what is
    lacking in Christ's afflictions.

10
The Flesh
  • 2. Sarx -- The tendency of a Fallen nature
  • 1 Cor. 1550
  • Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and
blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God nor does
    the perishable inherit the imperishable.
  • Galatians 613
  • For those who are circumcised do not even
keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have
you circumcised so that they may boast in your
    flesh.

11
The Flesh
  • Philip. 32-4
  • Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil
workers, beware of the false circumcision 3
for we are the true circumcision, who worship in
the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and
put no confidence in the flesh, 4 although I
myself might have confidence even in the flesh.
If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in
    the flesh, I far more

12
Romans 83-13
  • For what the Law could not do, weak as it was
through the flesh, God did sending His own Son
in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an
offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,
4 so that the requirement of the Law might be
fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the
flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those
who are according to the flesh set their minds on
the things of the flesh, but those who are
according to the Spirit, the things of the
Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is
death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and
peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is
hostile toward God for it does not subject
itself to the law of God, for it is not even able
to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh
    cannot please God.
  • 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in
the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in
you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of
Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ
is in you, though the body is dead because of
sin, yet the spirit is alive because of
righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who
raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who
raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give
life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who
    dwells in you.
  • 12 So then, brethren, we are under
obligation, not to the flesh, to live according
to the flesh 13 for if you are living
according to the flesh, you must die but if by
the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of
    the body, you will live.

13
The Flesh
  • Humanity (Rom. 320, 1 Cor. 129)
  • The Outward and Visible as opposed to the inner
    and spiritual (1 Cor. 55, 2 Cor. 71)
  • Can refer to Human relationships rather than
    Spiritual ones (Rom. 41, 93)
  • The sphere of or mode of human existence (Gal.
    220, Phil 122,24)
  • By nature, weak and mortal (2 Cor. 411,75)
  • What sometimes is trusted (Gal. 612-13)

14
Sin
  • Harmartia - to miss the mark
  • Universal (Romans 1 - 323, 512-21)
  • Consequential (Romans 623, 77-13)
  • Not just disobedience, or failure to live up to
    Gods standard Rather,
  • It is the failure to acknowledge God as God, and
the unwillingness to allow his Lordship in
    living. (Romans 12)

15
