2
De-Mystifying the use of Oracles Mobile Supply
Chain Application
  • This presentation will reveal the ins and outs
of implementing Oracles Mobile Supply Chain
Application. The discussion is based on an
11.5.7 implementation completed in the last year.
    Areas covered will be
  • Reasons for Implementing MSCA
  • The hardware required to implement the
    application
  • The Creation of Bar Code Labels
  • Performing Remote Transactions
  • Tips for Implementing MSCA

3
MSCA - WHAT IS IT?
  • Does it connect to inventory in a Mobil Vehicle?
  • Does it connect multiple occurrences of Oracle?
  • What does it do?

4
What it is used for..
  • Creation of Bar Code Labels
  • Facilitate Remote User Transactions
  • Supports Oracles Warehouse Management System
  • ???????

5
Typical Architecture
Telnet over TCP/IP
6
Hardware / Software Required
  • Separate Server Software Resides on Application
    Hardware
  • Bar Code Printers
  • Bar Code Scanners
  • Remote Devices
  • PC Terminal

7
Dispatcher
  • Balances Load on Server
  • Allows multiple servers to be active to support
    the load
  • Typically used if more than 50 users

8
Typical Architecture with Dispatcher
Telnet over TCP/IP
9
Bar Code Labels
  • Multiple Types of Formats
  • Only one format per type allowed with MSCA
  • Rules Based format use allowed with WMS

10
Modes of Printing
  • Synchronous Mode
  • Real time mode
  • Requires PL/SQL API
  • Returns success / failure messages
  • Prevents user to continue until return
  • Asynchronous Mode
  • Batch mode
  • Requires Listener from Label software
  • No knowledge of success / failure
  • Easier to implement

11
3rd Party Software Required
  • Use of Separate hardware / Server(s)
  • Formats Printer Drivers
  • Sets Font, Format
  • Takes Data from Oracle XML file to Server
  • Oracle Partners
  • Loftware Labeling
  • ClearOrbit
  • Others

12
Bar Code Labels Supported
  • Material
  • Serial
  • Location (subinventory)
  • Shipping (customer order)
  • Shipping Contents (delivery details)
  • LPN
  • LPN Content
  • LPN Summary
  • WIP Contents (order)

13
Creation of the Label
  • Automatic from Business Processes
  • Manually only from MSCA
  • If using separate hardware, create a script to
move XML files, include archiving when printed

14
Testing the Labels
  • Test by steps
  • Print XML File Manually before automatically
  • Verify data within 3rd Party Software
  • Verify the printing on the Label
  • Automate the printing of Labels
  • Scan the Labels
  • Use the Label File Logs (LABEL_XML.LOG)

15
Data Field Identifiers
  • Prevents out of sequence scanning
  • Embeds data field into barcode
  • Can be used to embed field navigation into
    barcode
  • Not necessary to implement MSCA

16
Oracle Transactions Available
  • Manufacturing
  • Discrete
  • Flow
  • Quality
  • Materials Management
  • Inventory
  • Shipping
  • Receiving
  • Printing Bar Code Labels
  • Inquiry

17
Transactions Available - Manufacturing
  • Moving, completing, and scrapping assemblies
  • Issuing and returning materials
  • Completing jobs and assemblies with License Plate
    Number (LPNs) data
  • Work orderless completions (with or without LPN)
  • View Job status, schedule, completions, scrap
  • Flow Manufacturing Completion and scrap
    transactions
  • Resource (time / labor) transactions
  • Quality results data (if Quality is installed)
  • LPN usage requires Warehouse Management System

18
Transactions Available Materials MGMT
  • Record inspections, deliveries, RMA, with
    receiving transactions
  • Perform misc / alias issues / receipts
    transactions, transfers, move orders
  • Create transactions for material kanban, cycle
    counting, intra-organization replenishment
  • Perform pick confirm and ship confirm, including
    quickship, transactions
  • Print Labels
  • Inquire on Item and kanban transactions

19
Oracle Transactions
  • Visibility is less than forms versions of
    transaction
  • Data accuracy a must
  • Processes must be accurate and always followed
  • Difficult to find additional information

20
11.5.8 Release Functionality
  • Project Manufacturing Support
  • Online Transaction Processing
  • Flow Manufacturing Completion Transaction Trigger
    for Label Printing
  • Serial Triggered Inventory Transactions
  • Order / Flow data to include shipping and order
    data for label printing
  • Item Triggered Inbound Receiving / Immediate
    Cross Reference Creation

21
Tips for Implementing
  • Make sure you have the Business Process flowing
    first
  • Consider MSCA as an add on application
  • Be careful of using RF when performing high
volume data TEST for data accuracy
  • Set Expectations
  • Dont implement for Technologys Sake
  • Test for high volume multiple occurrences

22
Lessons Learned.
  • Only one occurrence of user ID can be logged in
  • Changing label formats require bouncing server to
    activate
  • Function keys dont work with WIN2000 but fix is
    available

23
Lessons Learned.
  • XML log appends need to archive / clear
  • Label data can run over onto multiple labels
  • When creating a new instance from a copy change
the output directory to new path
  • Keep up with pending / error transactions within
    inventory
  • Loss of data with RF
