Iron Clads
- USS Monitor
- Engineered by John Ericsson
- Only 18 inches of deck showed above the water
line. - Contained a rotating turret
- Had to be towed from Brooklyn to Hampton Roads
because it was too slow.
- CSS Merrimack (CSS Virginia )
- Built 1855 in Boston Harbor. Was burn to the
waterline in 1861 and the hull sunk in the
Elizabeth River. - Redesigned and built by Liuetant John Brooks.
- fitted with a 1,500-pound iron ram affixed to her
bow, enabling her to crush the hulls of opposing
ships.
Battle of Hampton Roads The USS Monitor meets
up with CSS Merrimack ending in a draw. Naval
warefare will never be the same.
3Battle of Shiloh
- On April 6, Confederate forces attacked Union
forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh,
Tennessee. By the end of the day, the union
troops were almost defeated. Yet, during the
night, reinforcements arrived, and by the next
morning the Union commanded the field. When
Confederate forces retreated, the exhausted
federal forces did not follow. Casualties were
heavy -- 13,000 out of 63,000 Union soldiers
died, and 11,000 of 40,000 Confederate troops
were killed. Confederate General Johnston was
wounded in the leg and bled to death.

Shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free. - Changes the goal of the war
- 1. Bring southern states back into the Union
- 2. Free the slaves
- This also officially allowed African Americans to
enlist in the armed service.
