Telemedicine can support the current referral
system of the health delivery structure

Telemedicine and Continuing Education Project
  • The National Telemedicine Project has three
    phases.
  • The first phase is the pilot program, which is
    currently under implementation in some selected
    sites.
  • The second phase will consist of the expansion of
    the services to all of the regions using
    university and hospitals as center.
  • The third phase will be the expansion of the
    telemedicine network to the international link.
  • The pilot project focuses mainly on the
    application of medical services such as
    Dermatology and Radiology (Tele-Dermatology and
    Tele-Radiology) that can be delivered through
    telemedicine.

  • Pan African e-Network
  • Implementation of Tele-Education and
    Tele-Medicine Systems between Indian and
    Ethiopian Institutions.
  • EICTDA was coordinating this initiatives
  • Phase one will connect Addis Ababa University,
    Black Lion Hospital and one remote hospital.
  • Phase two 20 hospitals selected for
    implementation of telemedicine project.

Progress on ICT in the Health Sector
  • Connect FMoH headquarter with LAN/WAN network
    system. (in collaboration with CDC Ethiopia)
  • LAN system is on installation phase
  • Procurement of materials are on progress for WAN
    system
  • SNNPR has relatively better network system
  • All the woredas in Tigray region have Internet
    connections
  • Oromia planned to install LAN within their
    regional health offices
  • Support and technical assistant are expected from
    WHO in ICT area.

Challenge of ICT in the Health Sector
  • There is no separate unit responsible for ICT in
    all health service hierarchy
  • There is no focal ICT person almost at all levels
    of the health service delivery.
