What is Mini Baja?
  • Collegiate Design Competition
  • Engineering students are tasked to design and
build an off-road vehicle that will survive the
    severe punishment of rough terrain
  • All vehicles must be powered by the same 10 hp
    Briggs Stratton
  • Students must strive for innovative designs while
    following a strict rule book

3
History of Mini Baja
  • The SAE Mini Baja competition began in 1976 at
the University of South Carolina under the
direction of Dr. John F. Stephens.
  • In the first year of the competition, teams from
10 universities designed 1-man ATVs to face
several terrain challenges in Fort Jackson, SC.
  • In 1978 the competition was divided into 3
    regional competitions.
  • By 1983 the number of vehicles had risen from 10
at the first competition to 44 from 40 different
schools at the East regional alone.
  • 1985 marked the first year the East regional was
    held in Canada.

4
History of Mini Baja
  • In 1997 the competition was held in Canada and
temperatures were record lows for Mini Baja.
Water temperatures on the course were just above
    32 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • New 10 hp Intek Model 20 engines were donated by
Briggs and Stratton for each team in 2000. This
change came after almost 25 years with the Briggs
    and Stratton 8 hp engine.
  • In 2001 the East regional welcomed its first
competitor from outside of North America
    Alexandria University of Egypt.
  • Today there are competitions held in Brazil,
South Africa and South Korea in addition to the
    North American regionals.
