Web design

• Web pages are built on a PC
• Only the creator can look at them
• They can be previewed/tested in a browser
• Consider the size of images and pages
• Large size slow download
• Consider the capabilities of browsers
• Flash / frames / PC resolution

Web design

• No one can look at the site when it is on a
  designers PC
• It must be published
• Sent to a server (computer) that is always
  connected to the Internet
• Sent via a modem
• Certain parts of sites require actions to be
  taken by the server (server-side programming)

Web servers

• Computers which are always on the WWW
• Host (store) many sites (and email)
• Requests for web pages come to the server, not
  the developers PC
• Need to have firewalls
• Fault tolerant
• Who owns the servers?

Service providers

• ISP (Internet Service Provider)
• Host other peoples sites and email
• BT, 34SP, Tiscali, AOL, etc.
• All internet access and email storage is via the
  ISP
• Charge for hosting and traffic
• Let you but domain names www.me.com

Routers

• Find a web page requested by a user
• What is the URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
• Translates the URL into a number (IP address)
• E.g. www.yahoo.co.uk 19.145.223.87
• Try http//www.showmyip.com/gb/
• Decide on the best route to the web page
• Keeps statistics on the speed of the WWW
