Culture and Civil Liberties

• War has been the crisis that has most often
  restricts liberties
• Conflicts about freedoms surround the immigration
  of new groups

The Fourteenth Amendment (1868)

• Due Process Clause no state can take life,
  liberty or property without due process of law
• Equal Protection Clause no state can deny equal
  protection of the laws

• Public figures must also show the words were
  written with actual malice --knowledge that the
  words were false

The Free Exercise Clause (Part of 1st Amendment)

• Insures that no law may discriminate against a
  religion
• But there is no religious exemption from
