INTRODUCTION
  • Definition School violence is any behavior
that violates a schools mission or climate of
respect or jeopardizes the intent of the school
to be free of aggression against persons or
    property, drugs, weapons, disruptions, and
    disorder.

SCHOOL VIOLENCE STATISTICS

Guidance Channel (continued) Portion of this
website discusses how to settle conflicts
effectively
  • Set ground rules. Agreeing to listen to each
other without interruptions will lead to better
    understanding.
  • Have each person tell their side of the story.
You can better understand what the other person
may be upset about and clear up any
    misunderstandings.
  • Find common ground. It is okay to agree that you
disagree - everyone is entitled to their own
opinions. Try to find at least one thing you like
    about each other.
  • Brainstorm possible solutions. Even if you agree
to stay away from each other, at least there will
    be less confrontation.
  • Reach an agreement and abide by the terms agreed
upon. Write up an agreement in which you both
    agree to follow.

reveals that the percent of students reporting
street gang presence at school nearly doubled
    between 1989 and 1995, from 15.3 percent to 28.4
percent. The percentage of students reporting
that they'd been victims of a violent crime
increased from 3.4 percent to 4.2 percent. The
percentage of students who reported seeing
another student with a gun at school and who
reported knowing another student who brought a
gun to school was 5.3 percent and 12.7 percent
(1995 only). Read the full report for more
