CHF Canadas 2020 Vision Program

• 2020 Vision is a CHF Canada program that promotes
  excellence in the operation of housing co-ops. It
  has three parts
• helping co-ops develop a mission and vision based
  on shared values
• developing a toolkit to help co-ops realize their
  vision, using good governance and sound
  management
• delivering a program for co-ops to become
  certified as 2020 co-ops.

Why 2020 Vision?

• 2020 Vision has been developed to help Canadas
  housing co-ops prepare for the ending of
  their government funding agreements and their
  long-term first mortgages. So it is about getting
  co-ops ready for that future.
• 2020 Vision is also about the present improving
  the standards of management and governance in
  housing co-ops today.

2020 Certification

• The Program
• parallels the ISO 9000 standards for quality
  management systems
• includes a commitment to values as well as to
  processes and outcomes
• sets eight standards a co-op must meet to receive
  the 2020 Co-op designation.

The 2020 Co-op Standards

• A 2020 Co-op has
• a mission statement and a vision for its future
• a commitment to the values of the Canadian
  co-operative housing movement
• a capital reserve and investment plan
• a long-term financial plan
• good governance and principled leadership
• a comprehensive maintenance plan
• sound management
• a commitment to environmental sustainability.

A web-based program

• The 2020 Certification program is web-based.
  Co-ops use the internet to
• register for the program
• use the program guidebook to find out how to meet
  the eight standards
• provide documents and information to show each
  standard is met
• have access to the 2020 Vision toolkit a set of
  resources for co-op governance, management and
  planning
• get help from CHF Canada.

Timelines

• Co-ops have 12 months from the date of
  registration to meet the eight standards.
• Certification lasts for five years.

Whats the incentive?

• There are no major prizes for becoming 2020
  certified. Why would co-ops go through the
  process?
• Not all will. Those that do are driven by
• a sense of pride
• a commitment to the values on which the program
  is based
• their competitive instincts.
