UCLES and the AAT
  • UCLES is a highly competitive high-resolution
    spectrograph with a very stable PSF
  • However
  • Maximal resolution (R80000) requires a 0.5
    slit (with 15 ?m pixels)
  • AAT median seeing is 1.5
  • use 1 slits ? R45000
  • UCLES full potential is not being realised
  • A fibre feed at the Prime Focus will solve this
    problem

Instrument concept
  • Prime Focus SPIRAL-style fibre feed mounted at
    one of 90? positions on the 2dF tumbler
  • Use 2dF Focal Plane Imager for acquisition and
    guiding
  • Optical fibre bundle with 2 diameter
  • Exit slit feeding UCLES with a slit width
    equivalent to 0.58
  • This will give a resolution of 78000 with
    minimal slit losses

  • gt100 at 6000Å
  • Operational
  • UCLES could be scheduled between AAOmega runs
    with no top-end changes
  • Science
  • Dramatic efficiency increases i.e. more targets
    in less time in all seeing conditions

  • CYCLOPS will keep the AAO a world-leader in
    high-resolution spectroscopy of bright objects
  • It will make UCLES robust against AAT seeing
    conditions
  • At the same time, it will improve resolution and
    throughput
