4ORGS OVERVIEW
The Office of Research and Graduate Studies is
charged with oversight of all research projects
and creative activities at LSU, as well as the
operations of the Graduate School.
LSU is Louisianas only public Carnegie
Designated Doctoral/Research Extensive
Institution.
LSUs external funding for 2003-2004 totaled to
more than 134 million, up 10.2 percent from last
year.
5FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
- Council on Research Summer Stipend
Programwww.research.lsu.edu/ssp.html - provides financial support to researchers
- enables faculty recipients to spend a portion of
the summer term in research activity without the
distraction of other employment obligations - research can be carried out where appropriate
and is not restricted to the Baton Rouge campus - provides 5,000 stipend for a one-month
appointment during the month of July - limited to assistant professors (associate
professors in the arts and humanities may apply) - RFP goes out in September proposals are due
October 31

- Faculty Research Grant Program
- provides seed funding for new research projects
- two components to this program individual and
interdisciplinary - up to 10,000 for individual projects and up to
40,000 for interdisciplinary projects - All members of the faculty (tenure track and
research) of departments that participate in
LSUs indirect cost (FA) return program are

- Faculty Travel Grant Program
- allows faculty to attend national and
international conferences, conduct
data-gathering trips, and confirmed visits to
program directors at federal funding agencies - all faculty members (tenure-track and research)
are eligible - consists of a maximum of 750 for domestic

- Junior Faculty Travel Program
- provides support for assistant professors to
present their original research and scholarship
to their peers at venues such as conferences and
workshops - applicants should apply for assistance one month
before the intended travel date - limited to 500 for trips within the U.S. and

Capital Equipment Match Program LSU annually
spends 1,000,000 in support of faculty
initiatives to purchase capital equipment to
facilitate research and scholarship. The Office
of Research Graduate Studies (ORGS) will commit
matching equipment funds in all cases where such
a commitment is mandated as an eligibility
requirement in the Request for Proposals (RFP)
from the program. Requests for capital equipment
matches should be made directly to Kevin M.

- LaSMARTS, LaGENIUS SPIN are part of a
comprehensive, Web-based solution for educators
that provides up-to-date resources on funding

funding opportunities and delivers automatic
updates to your e-mail each day. - LaGENIUS is a searchable expertise profile
system that contains faculty CVs, and will soon
feature institutional profiles. - SPIN allows researchers to perform a customized
search of funding opportunities from a database
of more than 10,000 programs.

- Chancellor's Distinguished Lectureship Series
- The Chancellors Distinguished Lecturer Series
enhances the intellectual vitality of LSU and the
university to showcase its faculty, students, and
programs. The lectureship attracts
internationally renowned scholars to LSU and
helps us draw interdisciplinary groups of people
together. - nominations are accepted from any LSU faculty
member - a 1,500 honorarium is given to each speaker,
plus travel and on-campus lodging, and a
reception with faculty and students - full, one-day, on-campus visit including a
general public discussion and perhaps a
specialized, disciplinary discussion with
faculty and graduate students

- offers competitive freshman the opportunity to
be a direct participant in the research of an
LSU faculty member - gives faculty access to a superior student for
four years as a contributing member to his/her

faculty the opportunity to visit federal funding
agency program officers and give major invited
presentations at meetings - Research Competitiveness Subprogram - funds
proposals that strengthen the fundamental
research base and competitiveness of Louisiana's
public and private universities - Industrial Ties Research Program - funds
