    performance

Why ESI?
  • Goes beyond traditional regulatory approach
  • Recognizes commitment and superior environmental
    performance
  • Puts in place sustainable practices (compost vs.
    landfilling)
  • Builds partnerships (DENR, DOT, regulated
    community)
  • Based on Environmental Management Systems
    continual improvement is a key component

Eligibility
  • Any site-specific regulated organization whose
    activities impact the environment is eligible to
    participate
  • Includes but is not limited to manufacturers,
    businesses, agribusiness, service providers,
    government agencies, schools and nonprofit
    agencies.

Support Workgroups
  • External Advisory Board provides input and
    recommends Rising Stewards and Stewards
  • Appointed by DENR Secretary
  • Review program effectiveness and recommend
    changes to the Secretary
  • Internal DENR Workgroup recommends Partners and
    provides technical support to the Advisory
    Workgroup

  • Not be under environmental criminal indictment or
    conviction
  • Demonstrate commitment to compliance
  • Set environmental performance goals
  • Commit to implementing and maintaining
  • an EMS
  • Agree to report annually on progress
  • Applications accepted year around

  • Must
  • Meet Partner criteria
  • Set measurable environmental
  • performance goals (planning/reduction)
  • Demonstrate a mature EMS
  • Agree to report annually on progress
  • Applications accepted April-May, annually

  • Meet Partner Rising Steward criteria
  • Go beyond compliance
  • Set aggressive environmental performance goals
  • Have process for communication with community
  • Demonstrate how EMS is integrated into core
    business functions
  • Agree to report annually on progress
  • Agree to be a mentor to other ESI members
  • Applications accepted April-May, annually

    of contact within DENR (coach)
  • Networking opportunities

Member Coach Advantage
  • The ESI Coach
  • Usually is a DPPEA staff person with EMS
    regulatory experience.
  • Will assist with EMS design implementation.
  • Works with facility to meet environmental
    improvement goals (water/energy audits).
  • Assignments are based upon members needs and
    staff expertise.
  • Helps with completing annual reports and member
    applications (Rising Steward Steward).

    Secretary

Members Successes
  • City of Gastonia Wastewater Treatment Plant
    reduced noncompliance from a max. of 45 events in
    1999 to zero in 2004.
  • Smithfield Packing - Wilson saved over 200,000
    in 2005 due to composting, source reduction and
    water conservation.
  • The NC Zoo has installed a biodiesel processing
    unit to recycle its fryer grease into fuel for
    the zoo trams, buses, and other vehicles.
