Gideon The Cutpurse
  • By Linda Buckley - Archer

2
About The Author
  • Linda Buckley-Archer is going to be one of the
    best writers of our time.
  • She is said to be one of the new upcoming
writers, ready to step into J.K. Rowlings place.
  • Linda Buckler-Archer was born locally in Richmond
which is very close to us.
  • Linda embarked on the book whilst studying life
in the 1700s at university whilst doing a degree
in Physics. Using her knowledge from both of
these subjects she conjured up this book.

3
About The Book
  • Gideon Seymour (the cutpurse) was actually a real
person and was one of the most well known
    cutpurses at the time.
  • There was also another book written about him in
    1790 but was never published.
  • Peter Schock (our main character) is also a real
person who Linda Buckley Archer studied at
    university with.
  • This book mixes history with science and shows
the differences between now and then.
  • The book is set in the 1700s and the present day
    (at the same time).

4
Genre
  • This book falls into many genres it is a cross
between a sci-fi, fantasy and adventure genre.
  • Half of the book features in the 20th century
this is more realistic with a few fantasy
    moments.
  • The other half features in the 17th century which
is realistic in those times but the thing that
happen are a lot more sci-fi and fantasy.
  • All of the characters are normal people, there
    are no fantasy characters.

5
Plot
  • It is Peter Shocks birthday but not one to
remember as his father blows him out again with
    business.
  • He is taken down to his Au Pair Margrits friends
    house in the countryside.
  • Whilst there he meets Kate Dyer who he spends
most of his journey with. One day he goes to Mr
Dyers work place and Peter encounters a Van De
    Graff generator.
  • But something goes wrong and Peter and Kate end
up slap bang in the 17th century.
  • At first they dont know where they are but then
    they meet Gideon Seymour.
  • He takes them to London to help them find what
they need to get home. Whilst in the 17th century
both Kate and Peter can blur and appear as ghosts
    in the 20th century.

6
  • On the way to London they encounter highwaymen of
the road who try to attack them, but Gideon saves
    the day.
  • They seek the Tar man, the most feared person in
the country, who is believed to have the Van De
Graff generator they are looking for.
  • But when they find out Gideon's old boss Lord
Luxon has it, and Gideon gets arrested things
dont look too great for Peter and Kate.
  • Read the Book to find out what happens!

7
Gideon Seymour
  • Gideon Seymour is a normal 17th century cutpurse
    working for Lord Luxon.
  • This is until he comes across two very strange
children who claim they are from the future, and
    his life changes for ever.
  • A man with a blond pigtail down his back was
tending a wood fire. He had calm, deep blue eyes
and a broad, handsome face and he did not seem to
be the least surprised to see them.
  • Gideons parents abandoned him when he was 12
years old, he was forced to work with no pay but
he soon ran away from his job leaving his younger
    brother Joshua.
  • The only way he got anything was to steal, until
he was caught by a man called Lord Luxon who
    treated him extremely well.
  • Lord Luxon saw that Gideon had skill and hired
him as a cutpurse, Gideon only did this because
in return Lord Luxon would look after his brother.

8
Peter Schock
  • Peter was a young boy aged twelve living in
Richmond, his mother worked in America and him
and his dad didnt really get along, so his nanny
    Margrit looks after him.
  • Peter ruffled up his long brown hair whilst
Margrit attempted to get a comb through it
without it getting stuck. Peter had large green
eyes that twinkled in the light, Peter had always
been a tall boy, ever since he could walk he was
taller than most boys his age.
  • But when Peter makes a trip to the Dyer families
farm a series of events occurs that will stay in
    his memory for ever.

9
Setting
  • During the course of events in the book it does
not stay in the same place for very long.
  • There are four main places Derbyshire and London
(20th century), Derbyshire and London (17th
century). Quote Peter shivered, not because of
the cold. This was his first visit to Derbyshire
yet the landscape seemed inexplicably familiar.
  • The Derbyshire in both times are very similar
most of the building that Peter and Kate
encounter in the 17th century still exist in the
20th and the landscape is very familiar.
  • The London however is much different, everything
in the 17th century is much different to
nowadays, all the streets were cobbled all the
buildings have changed, there are only a few
things that still exist now. Quote And then they
saw it, the greatest city in Europe, stretched
out below them, set against a blue horizon made
hazy by the wood smoke of tens of thousands of
fires. A host of church spires rose up from a
maze of streets that described the curving
    contours of the Thames.

Paragraph Analysis
  • It is hell on earth. There is the foulest stench
that makes those with the strongest of stomachs
retch And the air is thick with cries and moans
that make your heart stop with horror of it. But
worst of all is the look in the eyes of those who
    have languished there any time.

Recommendation
  • http//www.gideonthecutpurse.com/
  • This is probably the best book in the series and
the best book I have ever read.
  • It somehow funnily gives you a series of
emotions, first anger, then sorrow, then
    happiness and so on.
