General Appearance
  • Posture body flexed, hands clenched
  • Skin Color consistent with ethnic background
  • acrocyanosis, circumoral cyanosis,
  • mottled when undressed
  • observe for bruising
  • texture smooth, soft, flexible may have dry,
    peeling hands and feet

  • Turgor elastic
  • Pigmentation milia across bridge of nose,
    forehead, or chin
  • Erythema toxicum (newborn rash)
  • Petechiae of head or neck r/t presentation

  • Fontanel slight pulsation, bulging w/ crying,
    stooling
  • Shape of head molding
  • 1/4th of body size
  • 2cm gt chest
  • Lacerations

  • Eyes bright clear, slight nystagmus, blue or
    slate blue gray, brown color at birth in dark
    skinned infants
  • Nares patent sneeze common
  • Mouth palate, suck, rooting, Epsteins pearls

  • Palpate neck for mass
  • Clavicles
  • Neck appears short as chin rests on chest

  • Breast buds engorgement, liquid discharge, may
    be firm

  • Full-term infant in ventral suspension should
    hold head at 45 degree angle, back straight
