  • Verify minimum system requirements are meet
  • Verify compatibility HCL or Win2K Readiness
    Analyzer
  • Hard drive configuration single or multiple
    partitions
  • System configuration normal or dual-boot
  • File system FAT16, FAT32, NTFS
  • Licensing Mode per server or per seat

  • Computer setup IP addresses, workgroups
  • Review all applications for installation
    compatibility

HDD Information
  • System partition
  • contains all of the boot files (NTLDR, Boot.ini,
    Ntdetect.com) need for 2000 to boot
  • must be on the first HDD (Disk 0) that is a
    primary, active partition
  • can reside on a FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS partition
  • Boot partition
  • contains all of the system files for 2000
  • can be same drive as system partition
  • Remember, the system partition contains boot
    files and the boot partition contains system
    files. Its backwards!

Licensing
  • Per Server
  • number of concurrent connections
  • use for 1 server networks and new, small networks
  • server controls logon ability
  • Per Seat
  • logon controlled by workstation
  • clients not limited to one server connection
  • requires separate CAL (Client Access License) for
    each station
  • You can switch from per server licensing to per
    seat. Cant go the other way. Andyou can only do
    this once.

Installation Methods
  • Setup boot disks
  • create bootable diskettes that automatically
    begin the installation process
  • In the \bootdisk directory, run either
    makeboot.exe (16-bit for DOS, Win3.x, Win95) or
    makebt32.exe (32-bit for NT 4.0 and 2000)
  • This requires 4 blank floppy diskettes
  • Once the 4 disks are created, place Disk 1 in FDD
    and boot the system
  • CD-ROM
  • either bootable CD drive or from a different OS
    (DOS, Win3.x, Win9x, WinNT, Win2K)

  • Winnt.exe used to start the install from a
    16-bit OS
  • Winnt32.exe used to start the install from a
    32-bit OS
