• Naturalism focused on social issues facing
  working classes and womens rights. Writers
  sought to be objective and to analyze modern
  industrialized society.
• Emile Zola (1840-1902) viewed as the
  founder of this movement. His novels portray
  people trying to control their destinies in an
  uncaring universe.

• Decadent writers rejected material values and
  scorned science. Viewed capitalist bourgeois
  society as mediocre.
• Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) at the center of
  the Decadent movement, his writing presented a
  relaxed and cynically amused approach to modern
  life.

• Expressionism sought a new means of artistic
  expression to counter the effects of capitalist
  bourgeois society.
• Franz Kafka (1883-1924) his symbolic stories
  questioned traditional concepts of reality and to
