Cultural origins
  • Hardcore was born in U.S.A. in early 80s
  • Connected with bands like Minor Threat, Bad
Brains (Washington D.C), Sheer Terror, Warzone,
M.O.D. (New York), SS Decontrol, Slapshot, Blood
for Blood (Boston), Black Flag(Los Angeles)
  • Its a faster, heavier version of punk rock,
characterized by short, loud, and often
    passionate songs.
  • Hardcore lyrics often express righteous
indignation at society, usually from a
    politically left perspective.

3
The first bands
  • Black flag
  • Bad Brains
  • Minor threat

4
Black flag
  • Formed in 1976 in Los Angeles
  • They popularized the punk rock in U.S.
  • Characterized by their raw, aggressive style
  • DIY philosophy (Do It Yourself)
  • Henry Rollins- singer, hes known from TV, radio,
    etc.

5
  • Henry rollins

6
Bad brains
  • Formed in 1977 in Washington D.C.
  • Group of young African-Americans
  • Influences of funk, soul , but in their sound you
can recognize a little bit from bands like Black
    Sabbath or Sex pistols too

7
  • Lucian Perkins

8
Minor threat
  • Formed in 1980 in Washington D.C.
  • The essential hardcore band (at least for me ?)
  • Because of them people started call this style
    hardcore
  • Frontman Ian McKaye came with the Straight Edge
    Movement (sXe)

9
Straight Edge
  • Kind of lifestyle characterized by a negative
stance to drugs (alcohol, cigarettes and coffee
    too) and promiscuity
  • Also connected with veganism
  • sXe has got a dangerous millitant fraction called
a Hard Line or Pro Life, who can attack you if
you are drunk, but the original sXe people
    condemned them
  • The symbol of straight edge is the cross, which
barmans drawed on the under ages wrist (it meant
that the person is under 21 so cant drink

negative publicity
  • Unfortunately, the hardcore scene became
    associated with violence.
  • Conflicts with police
  • Especially in N.Y. where played the skinhead HC
bands were problems with fascist boneheads, cause
they liked the HC style too
  • Journalists wrote that bands like Agnostic Front
are the fascist ones and that wasnt true (now
    its OK)
  • But violence is still present, especially in
    Boston

14
80S- 90s bands
  • The change from oldschool HC to newschool (mainly
in 90s) with bands like Sheer Terror, Cause for
    Alarm, etc.
  • Newschool sounds rather like trash metal, usually
its called metalcore or hatecore (for example a
    band Hatebreed)
  • The 80s legends are Sick Of It All, Madball,
Warzone and from sXe for example Gorilla Biscuits
or Youth Of Today (most of them still plays)
  • From the present very popular are bands like
    Hatebreed, Endstand, Death Before Dishonour,
    Hoods
  • sXe Outlast, Champion, Good Clean Fun, Darkest
Hour, Projekt X or Vitamin X

performed in a mosh pit at HC music shows.
  • The practice grew mostly out of the East Coast
