Title: Robotics

1
Robotics
  • Robotics is the field of knowledge
  • and techniques that permit the
  • Construction of robots.
  • Robots are designed to carry out various tasks in
place of humans for example, on a factory
assembly line, or on a mission to Mars or other
    dangerous place.

2
Robotics
  • Robots are more than simple
  • computers they must be able to
  • sense and react to changes in their environment.
  • The total number of robots in use worldwide
    stands at around 1.4 million
  • Japan still remains the world's most robotized
economy, and is home to around half the 770,000
robots working in factories around the world.

3
Advantages
  • They can work for 24hrs a day
  • They can do repetitive tasks
  • They can do dangerous jobs
  • They dont take any breaks or holiday
  • They are possibly cheaper in the workplace
  • They are possibly faster than humans
  • They can carry out a more precise job

4
Disadvantages
  • They can cause job losses
  • If they break down, the task is not carried out
  • Expensive to purchase and maintain
  • They cant think for themselves

5
The Squirrel
  • an animatronic desktop squirrel which
  • deals with your calls for you. The
  • squirrel answers phone calls, works
  • out if you are busy or asleep, evaluates how
important the incoming call is and takes
    messages.
  • When it wants to alert its owner to a call, it
waves and moves about rather than making a sound.
  • In previous incarnations, the device has been a
bunny and a parrot. The idea was to dress the
technology up as something which we would be
    happy talking down to.

6
Repliee Q1Expo the female android
  • She has flexible silicone for skin rather
  • than hard plastic, and a number of
  • sensors and motors to allow her to turn and
    react in a human-like manner.
  • She can flutter her eyelids and move her hands
like a human. She even appears to breathe.
  • To program her motion, a computer analysed the
motions of a human and used them as a template
for the way Repliee Q1Expo moves.

Robo-docs
  • "Sister Mary" glides between beds and allows the
controlling doctor to visually examine and
communicate with a patient from anywhere in the
    world.
  • A patient at London's Guy's Hospital has recently
undergone a live kidney transplant surgery
carried out by a robot - the UK's first.
  • The da Vinci robot has also been used to remove
    bladders and repair hearts.
  • While the robots will never replace all doctors
on ward rounds, they could help relieve some of
    the current
  • strains on the NHS.

8
Robo-maids
  • More and more people are turning to robots to do
their household chores, such as mowing lawns and
    vacuuming carpets.
  • The cordless machine uses ultrasound to avoid
obstacles and to work out the most efficient
route around a room it has been set to clean.
  • The robots have become more attractive to the
    public because of its cheapness.
  • Vacuum cleaner 119 - 1017
  • Lawn mower 418
  • Kids monitoring robot 600
  • Industrial robot average cost 44,887
